Taylor Swift won’t be at Super Bowl LX in February, but one of her favorite singers will be. Charlie Puth, whom Swift generously described as a “bigger” artist than she, is set to open the Super Bowl at Levi’s Stadium by performing the U.S. National Anthem.

The main event is, of course, the big clash between the Seattle Seahawks and the New England Patriots. After months of grinding, the NFC and AFC sides qualified for football’s biggest event.

The second-seeded Patriots (14-3) defeated the Chargers, Texans, and finally the Broncos in the conference championship to earn their first trip to this stage since the 2018 season. Meanwhile, the first-seeded Seahawks overcame challenges from the 49ers and the Rams to book a ticket to San Francisco.

Both teams will sport their away kits after the Patriots successfully appealed to wear their alternate all-white uniforms, even though they’re the home team. Before everything else, Charlie Puth will sing a rendition of the USA National Anthem.

The backlash wasn’t as fierce as in the case of Bad Bunny, but a section of the internet wasn’t thrilled to hear Puth landing the opening act at the Super Bowl. Political commentator Link Lauren tweeted, “Man, we’ve fallen from when Whitney Houston sang at the Super Bowl (1991). Charlie Puth? He’s not gonna give us vocals, I’m afraid.”

Despite the obvious dig, the “We Don’t Talk Anymore” singer calmly handled the criticism directed at him. He conceded that he doesn’t see himself in the same stature as Whitney Houston, but at the same time vowed to make it a memorable experience for the audience.

I assure you we’re putting a really special arrangement together—in D major.

Charlie Puth tweeted

Puth is a close friend and peer of Grammy Award winner Taylor Swift. The 34-year-old featured in the title song of Swift’s recent album, The Tortured Poets Department.
