Super Bowl LIX is set to ignite the gridiron on Sunday, February 9th. While millions will be glued to the rematch between the Kansas City Chiefs and the Philadelphia Eagles, the excitement extends far beyond the final score.

The Super Bowl isn’t just a battle for the Vince Lombardi Trophy; it’s a spectacle of entertainment, featuring performances by award-winning artists both before kickoff and during the halftime show.

The Chiefs, fresh off their AFC Championship victory over the Buffalo Bills (32-29), are aiming for a historic three-peat. Meanwhile, the Eagles, after dominating the Washington Commanders 55-23 in the NFC Championship, are hungry to avenge the loss two years ago.

The NFL announced last November that NOLA native Jon Batiste will sing the National Anthem at Super Bowl LIX in 2025 to kick off the pre-game festivities. He follows Reba McEntire, who sang the anthem at Super Bowl LVIII.

Batiste is a celebrated singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist. He led the band Stay Human on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert from 2015 to 2022. He has won five Grammy Awards, including Album of the Year for We Are in 2021. The Louisiana native also co-composed music for Disney and Pixar’s Soul. He recently scored the movie Saturday Night. A 2023 documentary, American Symphony, focuses on his life and work.

Trombone Shorty and Christian singer Lauren Daigle will team up for a performance of “America the Beautiful.” The pre-game festivities also include the “Lift Every Voice and Sing,” often considered as the Black national anthem. In addition to the pre-game festivities, there’s also a half-time show featuring Kendrick Lamar and SZA.

Will the “Black National Anthem” be played at the Super Bowl LIX?

Grammy Award-winning artist Ledisi will perform the controversial “Lift Every Voice and Sing” before the highly anticipated matchup between the Kansas City Chiefs and the Philadelphia Eagles.

Known for her powerful voice and significant contributions to the music industry, Ledisi has garnered multiple accolades, including a Grammy Award, five honorary awards, and an impressive 46 nominations.

As the tradition continues, “Lift Every Voice and Sing” remains a poignant anthem, symbolizing the ongoing struggle for equality and the unifying power of music. Originally written by James Weldon Johnson in 1900, the hymn was first performed by a choir of 500 schoolchildren in Jacksonville, Florida. Over the years, it has become an enduring piece of American history and has gained renewed prominence after the George Floyd murder in 2020.

This tradition began in 2021 when Alicia Keys was the first artist to perform the song at the Super Bowl. Her pre-recorded performance aired before Super Bowl LV, where the Tampa Bay Buccaneers triumphed over the Kansas City Chiefs. Now, Ledisi takes the stage, carrying on the legacy of this powerful song and its message of unity and hope.
