At the moment, Edinson Cavani holds the No 7 jersey at Manchester United. After many players like Antonio Valencia, Memphis Depay, Angel di Maria and Alexis Sanchez, Edinson Cavani broke the curse of No 7. The Uruguayan international scored ten goals in the English top-flight for Red Devils in 26 games. Out of those 26 games, he started in 10 and also had three assists to his name.

Across all competitions for Manchester United, Edi Cavani has scored 17 goals with five assists in 39 appearances. He was given a contract extension on this basis. Also, the player was allowed to continue in the No 7 jersey despite Jadon Sancho arriving at Old Trafford. However, with Cristiano Ronaldo coming back to Old Trafford, the question continues. Who will wear the No 7 jersey at Manchester United?

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has handled the situation well at Old Trafford. Though Raphael Varane’s preferred number was 4, the gaffer allowed Phil Jones to continue with the number. Raphael Varane was allocated No 19 on his unveiling. Similarly, Ole might approach the player with the same strategy. He will allow Edi Cavani to continue with No 7. Moreover, Cavani has a year left on his contract. Cristiano Ronaldo has two years on his contract and can retire with No 7 jersey later.

On the other hand, there are very few numbers available for Ronaldo if he is looking for a number less than 19 in case he is going to honor Edinson Cavani. There is No 12 which is vacant ever since Smalling’s departure and No 15 that is vacant with Andreas Pereira’s loan move to Flamengo. 24 and 28 are the other two numbers that are available below 30. Or else Cristiano Ronaldo will have to opt for a number like 37,47,57,67,77 and make them the iconic numbers for the future.

It remains interesting to see how Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and the Manchester United board handle the situation. Will Cristiano Ronaldo wear his iconic No 7 jersey on his return to Old Trafford?
