Khamzat Chimaev has just fought three fights in the UFC, and is already being touted as the next big thing. He faces Leon Edwards on the 19th of December. And more recently Khamzat also broke into the top 15 of the welterweight division rankings.

He even took to Twitter to claim that he should be number one and not number 15. But, one guy doesn’t seem to be pleased with this. It is none other than UFC’s very own ‘Wonderboy’ Stephen Thompson.

Speaking in an interview, the Karate Instructor wasn’t particularly pleased with “the Borz” breaking into the top 15, having fought only three fights, before going onto say that rankings have become a non-existent thing and it was all about the exciting fights.

Sitting in a room with anime posters all around him, Thompson speaking to Submission Radio, was quoted as saying, “Rankings is becoming a non-existent thing, it’s about the exciting fights. I kind of called it. I was like, man, why are they pushing this Khamzat guy so hard. And then I was like, watch Khabib retire. And they kind of did the same thing with Till.

When Bisping retired, they needed somebody from that market to keep those fans involved, and Till was it. And I guess the same thing with Khamzat. They knew that Khabib was gonna retire and they needed somebody from that market, and there you go. You’ve got this Khamzat guy who’s been doing work.”

Thompson was not happy with the way Khamzat had called him out once. Speaking of which he said, “At the time I felt disrespected when he mentioned my name. There was like a lot of fake news about me fighting him. I was like ‘No I’m not, I don’t even know who this guy is.’ At the time I didn’t. I wasn’t really watching a lot of the UFC.

It is to be noted that Stephen Thompson faces Geoff Neal, the same night Khamzat Chimaev takes on Leon Edwards!
