- UFC veteran Matt Brown criticized the White House event fight card for lacking major stars and high-profile matchups.
- The event, titled Freedom Fights 250, is scheduled for June 14, 2026, featuring a lightweight unification bout as the main event.
- Dana White's promotion of the event set high expectations, leading to disappointment among fans when the actual lineup was revealed.
UFC CEO Dana White teased the White House event for months, providing updates on the scale of the highly anticipated historic fight card. After the card was released, the MMA community criticized it for lacking major stars and high-profile matchups. UFC veteran Matt Brown recently highlighted this issue, noting the clear gap between the event’s location and the fighters on the lineup.
The UFC kept the White House card top secret until releasing it during the UFC 326 broadcast. The event, officially titled Freedom Fights 250, is scheduled for June 14, 2026, on the White House South Lawn. The main event features a lightweight unification bout between Ilia Topuria and Justin Gaethje, while the co-main is an interim heavyweight fight between Alex Pereira and Ciryl Gane.
Despite featuring fighters like Sean O’Malley and Alex Pereira, many considered the White House card underwhelming. Hype had built around legends such as Jon Jones or Conor McGregor appearing. However, none of those matchups materialized, leaving the event without the stars fans expected. Brown recently highlighted this gap, noting the disparity between the card’s promotion and its actual roster.
Initially when I first looked through the card, I was not impressed at all. It’s a good card. It truly is. My kind issue with the card, if my problems with this card mean anything, is they set the expectations high. On top of that, the bigger thing that kind of bothered me, this is a once in a lifetime event that every UFC fighter on the roster wanted to fight at. I don’t think there’s a single person who’s like ‘I don’t want to fight at the White House, on this historic event.’ They’ve got guys I’ve never even heard of. I remember who they are when I kind of thought about it for a minute.

Hype grew as White and US President Donald Trump provided regular updates leading up to the card’s official announcement. White promised a spectacular night with some of the best fights in UFC history. Trump proposed a 100,000‑seater stadium around the South Lawn with nearly six to seven title fights. The reported budget is around $60 million, underscoring the production’s ambitious scale and significance.
Brown was closely following updates on the White House card. He believed the event required an American champion or legendary fighter to compete. The veteran had advocated for Jon Jones to appear due to his American heritage, seeing him as a natural fit. However, White confirmed Jones’s retirement, shutting down any possibility of the UFC legend returning for the June 14th event.
Matt Brown argued the issue is not just the fighters selected, but how the UFC promoted the event. By that measure, he believes the promotion set itself up for failure, as the hype exceeded what the card could deliver. The mismatch between marketing and reality left many disappointed. Dana White’s efforts to present the event as historic undoubtedly highlighted the challenge of meeting such high expectations.
Dana White speaks on Conor McGregor’s potential return to the UFC
Conor McGregor’s impact on MMA is widely recognized. He was the first UFC fighter to hold two titles simultaneously, winning the featherweight and lightweight championships in 2016. McGregor headlined multiple pay‑per‑view events, setting buy records and expanding MMA’s audience. Dana White has credited him as the sport’s first true global star, highlighting his role in the UFC’s mainstream presence.

However, the Irishman has not fought since 2021, though he has teased multiple comebacks over the years. He appeared serious about returning for the UFC White House event and reportedly began a major training camp in preparation. Despite this, McGregor was ultimately not included on the card. Following the snub, Dana White recently addressed the former double champion’s future.
No update but we are definitely talking to Conor. Obviously, not even close [to a timetable for his return]. We have no date for Conor right now. Not even close.

Reports suggest McGregor could return during International Fight Week 2026, a marquee UFC event held annually in Las Vegas. Speculation centers on a high-profile matchup, though no opponent or date has been officially confirmed. Dana White has emphasized that while discussions are ongoing, the UFC has not finalized any plans, leaving the timing of ‘The Notorious One’s comeback uncertain.
