One of the things fans missing out in the current generations of NASCAR racing is learning how much their favourite driver earned from racing in a season. It was a thing to brag about in the past for the passionate stock racing fans, as the total earning of each driver owing to their performance in each event were used to public knowledge.

But NASCAR no longer shares this information on public, with the total prize pool for the recent making the only monetary value that is publicly revealed. Recently senior NASCAR journalist Jeff Gluck has given his opinion on topic and has revealed why he thinks the series owners are refusing to share payout.

I think it started with NASCAR not wanting — they said, ‘Oh, fans don’t care about the money part of this,’ which I think fans definitely do. And it also came with the charters — it’s not as straightforward details.

Jeff Gluck said via The Teardown podcast.

The thing that made all of it complicated is the new charter system. They payout aren’t as straightforward as they used to be, with many different things factored in before the final payout. So NASCAR thought it better to keep things under the wraps than explaining it.

They don’t really want to disclose the per race winnings necessarily because part of it is the historical value. There’s several different buckets you get paid from. And so, it’s not as straightforward as OK, you finished 13th in this race so you get x amount of dollars.

Jeff Gluck explained how he cherished the payout information back in the day with Jeff Gordon comment

While further talking about the point, Jeff Gluck asserted that he used to love the payout revelation from back in the day. He loved knowing how much each driver won as part of the payout, like news on Jeff Gordon making x amount of money. But things are now more complicated and harder to explain.

But I used to think that was really cool. Even Racing Reference, now you look back in the day and say, ‘Oh, Jeff Gordon made x amount of dollars this season, wow, that’s incredible.’ And you could look at all the payouts from back in the day. Think that was pretty cool. But I think the charters made it more complicated and are a reason why it’s less straightforward now. And harder to explain.

Jeff Gluck said.

The comment from Gluck shows a lost nostalgia and it is something many fans of the sports agrees with. NASCAR should try to open with at least how much the race winner got for the impressive performance. It would be interesting to see if NASCAR would ever consider the suggestion.
