After finishing last season at 4-8, the Colorado Buffaloes’ comeback this season hasn’t been less than a miracle. However, despite concluding the season in four-way for the first spot in the Big 12 Conference, they have officially been snubbed off the playoff contention– making everyone wonder ‘why?’
Jumping in straight away, the Deion Sanders’ Colorado knew they lost the season when they suffered a crushing loss against Kansas State, last month, that eliminated their odds of qualifying for the College Football Playoffs, according to the Big 12 tiebreaker rules. And if that was a disappointment, they also did not start the season on a good note.
If there’s any team with three losses expected to qualify for the postseason could be the SEC Giants or Alabama. Despite the Buffs’ impressive 9-3 record, they haven’t faced off against an AP Top 25 team. As far as their Big 12 leadership is concerned, they also failed to qualify for the Big 12 Championship Game as Arizona State and Iowa State are set to face off for the title next weekend.
The only possibility for Colorado to qualify for the Big 12 Championship would have been any two teams among Arizona State, BYU and Iowa State experienced losses in the final week of the regular season. If only the Buffs had succeeded with a victory against Kansas on November 23, they might be preparing for the Big 12 title.
Deion Sanders’ Colorado’s bowl game prospects after playoff dreams dashed
While the playoff dreams are crushed, there’s still a chance for Colorado to play in the bowl game– the Alamo Bowl on December 28th. Typically, a Big 12 team faces off against a former Pac-12 Conference team in the Alamo Bowl as established by contracts predating the demise of the Pac-12 Conference.
The Alamo could pick the Buffaloes as being a former Pac-12 team to play against either Iowa State or BYU if the Arizona State clinches the Big 12 Championship. On the other hand, if Iowa succeeds in winning the title against ASU, Colorado can face off against the Arizona Cardinals in the Alamo Bowl game.
However, if the Alamo passed on the Buffaloes, they may be picked by the Holiday Bowl which also picks a former Pac-12 team and the Buffs can be set against the Atlantic Coast Conference, which is scheduled for December 27th.
