Why is Fortnite Axe crashing system with Blue Screen of Death?

Cosmetic glitches and bugs in Fortnite are not uncommon, but the recent discovery of a bug with the “Dread Oracle Axe” harvesting tool has raised concerns among players. The bug causes computers to crash with the dreaded “blue screen of death” (BSOD), which is a serious issue as BSOD only occurs when the system encounters a massive error and has to reboot.

The Dread Oracle Axe was introduced to Fortnite in Chapter 2 Season 4 as part of the Darkening Set, priced at 2,500 V-Bucks in the Item Shop. The set was last seen in-game on January 7, 2023. While the set as a whole has no issues, the Dread Oracle Axe has a unique problem with its lighting/glow effect.

Youtuber TGPlays (Andre Rebelo) posted a video showing how this cosmetic causes the game (and his PC) to crash and encounter the “blue screen of death.” In the video, he explains that when players equip the Dread Oracle Axe, it has a dark secret. Every time you swap from your pickaxe to your weapon, the color-glow effect will stack forever, and it can even crash the game.

According to TGPlays, after about 30 minutes of triggering this glitch, his game dropped to 5 FPS while using the Dread Oracle Axe. Upon repeating the glitch a few more times, his game froze, and his PC crashed to meet the “blue screen of death.”Fortnite’s developer, Epic Games, have not released any statement yet on this issue and players are warned to avoid using this cosmetic to prevent crashing their systems. Having a cosmetic cause a crash is a serious concern, and players are calling on Epic Games to fix this issue as soon as possible.

When will Fortnite fix the BSOD?

Considering the number of time-sensitive “core” issues that Epic Games, the developer of Fortnite, currently has to investigate, this bug is not a top priority for the company. Therefore, it is likely that it will take some time for them to fix the issue. In the meantime, the Darkening Set, which includes the Dread Oracle Axe, will likely remain vaulted and kept clear of the Item Shop.

Players who own the Dread Oracle Axe, should be careful when using it in Fortnite Chapter 4 Season 1. It is recommended that they avoid equipping and unequipping the axe excessively to prevent the crash from occurring during quests.

It is important to note that the bug is not present in every instance of use and only appears when used excessively, but it is highly recommended to use it with caution until further notice from the developer or a patch that fixes the issue.
