BCCI logo still has Star of India symbol

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) still uses a symbol that resembles the ‘Star of India‘ honor given to the Indian princes by the British during colonial times. The British started this practice to consolidate its sovereignty over India after the First War of Indian Independence in 1857. But after the independence of India, such honor givings were stopped.

The Star of India was a group of flags used by the British after the establishment of the British Raj in 1858. It combined symbols of Imperial authority (Union Jack and royal crown) with symbols related to their respective colonies. They had even adopted the same design in their other colonies, such as Canada and Australia.

Why the BCCI is still using the logo designed by British Raj in 1928 which resembles 90% the symbol of the star of India given by British Raj to his loyal princes…,” the then Information Commissioner Sridhar Acharyulu said in an order issued on the plea of activist Subhash Agrawal back in 2017.

CIC posed question to PMO in 2017 about why the BCCI still uses the Star of India symbol

BCCI, when it was established in 1928, was using the star symbol which was designed by the British Raj. But as the BCCI kept on using the symbol, back in 2017, the Central Information Commission (CIC) posed a question to the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) and the ministries of sports and law.

After the First War of Indian Independence in 1857, to consolidate its sovereignty over India, the British Crown created a new order of knighthood to honor loyal Indian princes,” the CIC asked.

No such honors were given after 1948. Did anybody notice that the BCCI is still hanging on to this colonial legacy, ‘symbolically’, and our team flags this logo even today,” the CIC in his statement. The CIC had even asked to change the symbol to that of either tricolor or four lions or Ashoka’s Dharam Chakra. The CIC further asked the government why it is not bringing the BCCI under the RTI Act.

The BCCI is still an autonomous and private organization and does not come under the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports. Whether it will change the Star of India symbol to adopt something new is still unclear.
