The Chicago Bears made an unprecedented decision after the team’s 23-20 loss to the Detroit Lions on Thursday. The team fired Head Coach Matt Eberflus with five games still left in the season. The decision came just hours after he had addressed the media following the team’s loss.
The question naturally arose, why would the Bears have allowed Matt Eberflus to the podium if they intended to fire him anyway? The Head Coach expressed his confidence on the podium that his job was safe and defended his decision-making skills in the final minute of regulation.
As per Tom Pelissero, the team’s owners George McCaskey, Kevin Warren, and General Manager Ryan Poles were busy determining the future of Eberflus while he was addressing the media.

Matt Eberflus was informed about his firing after his press conference
The trio were engaged in a meeting that reportedly lasted for hours. While they were determining if the franchise could continue to rely on him for the foreseeable future, it was time for the Head Coach to address the media. Since he was not notified of anything by the team, he proceeded as normal.
George McCaskey, Kevin Warren, and Ryan Poles decided to head in a different direction and this was a while after he had concluded his media obligations. It was surprising to hear the team had parted ways with Eberflus when he had just addressed the media a few hours earlier. Some fans and analysts questioned the timing of the gesture on the part of the franchise but now there is clarity on how things went down.
It has been an odd season for Thomas Brown who was first entrusted to replace OC Shane Waldron and now is appointed as the interim HC of the team. The Bears’ quest for the playoffs is done and the team will look to develop and come back stronger next season. This time, the team’s ownership is likely to bring in an experienced Head Coach with a stellar track record. There is no ruling out the possibility of bringing Bill Belichick on board either.
