The 17-time World Champion John Cena will not retire in front of his hometown, as the rights to host his last match have been secured by Washington.

Even though it feels like yesterday when John Cena kicked off his farewell tour on the Netflix debut episode of Raw, the truth is that he’s winding down. The wrestler-turned-actor will have his last WWE match on December 13. And contrary to what had been rumored for a long time, he will not retire in his hometown of Boston. But why’s that, and what exactly changed?
As per Jon Alba, the city of Boston pushed hard to acquire the rights to host Cena’s wrestling swan song. However, it lagged behind for not bidding in the range of what WWE was looking for. Wrestling Observer Daily Update noted that the company was hoping to emulate the on-site fees it had received from New Jersey by hosting a series of events there and capping it off with a two-night SummerSlam.
WWE just announced John Cena will make his final appearance in Boston in November, which means his last match in December will not be there.

Sources indicated to me Boston went very hard for hosting it, but WWE wanted the city to cover costs it previously hadn’t for WWE events. pic.twitter.com/tycOJpPGBv
Since Boston didn’t bid high enough, the honors to hold Cena’s last-ever WWE match were transferred to the nation’s capital, Washington. And as first reported on WrestleVotes Radio, the Capital One Arena in D.C. is the planned venue for those wondering. Having said that, WWE has also announced that Cena will work a couple of Raw tapings in November.
Washington, DC was chosen as the location for John Cena's retirement show instead of Boston, Massachusetts because WWE wanted more money than Boston was offering:

The reason the John Cena retirement show won’t be in Boston is because WWE wanted money similar to what they got… pic.twitter.com/IH85dWavAc
Those include the one at TD Garden in Boston on 11/10 and a week later at MSG on 11/17. The aforementioned appearances will most likely determine what he will do at Survivor Series: WarGames on November 29. After that, the long-adjudged ‘Babe Ruth of WWE’ will gear up to do it for one last time at Saturday Night’s Main Event, which will stream exclusively on Peacock.
What happened with John Cena in his last-ever SmackDown outing?
This past Friday, John Cena made his last appearance on SmackDown in the same Allstate Arena where it all began for him. Over 20 years ago, in that building, a promising OVW prospect in Cena brazenly slapped Kurt Angle to kick-start his journey in WWE. Having said that, this week’s SmackDown truly felt like a full-circle moment for the 48-year-old.

After expressing gratitude for the Chicago crowd, he got interrupted by Sami Zayn. The ‘Underdog from the Underground’ thanked Cena for putting him on the map. So, Zayn, in turn, offered the WWE great a shot at his US Championship as his quest to revive the Cena-made-famous US title open challenge. After the sold-out arena chanted for it, Cena couldn’t resist accepting the challenge.

The two of them went on to have an above-par TV match in which the Peacemaker star paid homage to some of his great rivals, like Angle and Adam “Edge” Copeland, by using their maneuvers against Zayn. What was on track to become one of the best weekly WWE matches in recent memory was crashed by a returning Brock Lesnar.
He arrived, dragged the referee out, F-5ed Zayn, and landed a couple of those on Cena as well. It was The Beast’s first WWE appearance since his shocking SummerSlam emergence. Lesnar also challenged Cena for a match at Wrestlepalooza, which was made official.
John Cena is inching closer to 100 PLE wins
Last month, on August 31, John Cena recorded his 99th PPV (now PLE) win. With that, he is only behind The Undertaker, whose record of 107 wins seems unlikely to be broken at all. ‘The Franchise Player’ opposed Logan Paul in a high-octane battle at Clash at Paris.

Despite initial hiccups in their feud, their match turned out to be an immense success, and it resonated with the majority of the fans. During the course of it, Cena used moves like The End of Days and the Styles Clash in a bid to honor stars like Baron Corbin and AJ Styles, respectively, who’ve been instrumental in some form or shape to his career.

While many fans were hoping for ‘The Phenomenal One’ to lock horns with the 17-time world champion on his retirement tour, it appears like a far-fetched dream at this point. Also, with so little time left before Cena rides off into the sunset, the only realistic choice one has is to temper their expectations when it comes to another Cena vs. Styles match by December.
