The Houston Astros have apparently offered a 6-year $156 million deal to their third base Alex Bregman, current free agent, recently. As per Brian McTaggart of MLB.com, the Astros have not yet ruled out a reunion in 2025 with Bregman.

However, reports say the 30-year-old is looking for a deal closer to $200 million, which may offset the Astros. This is the club’s highest offer monetarily during owner Jim Crane’s era.

The organization has never offered more than 5-year deal to any free agents. The highest being Jose Altuve’s extension back in 2018 of $151 million. Crane noted that he will keep in mind, Altuve’s plea to extend an offer and keep Alex Bregman with the team in 2025.

Although, the final decision will come down to business and not emotion. Jose Altuve said that he’d be “heartbroken” if Bregman left the team in 2025.

I don’t want to think about my last game with Breggy. I’m pretty confident he’s going to be our third baseman next year. We have to. We’re not going to be the same organization without him. In my mind, there’s not a chance this is the last game.

Not only Altuve but also the team appreciates Bregman as well. However, the team may move on from the third baseman if he ponders on his decision too long. They may look for replacements, and trades, or focus on boosting first and second bases.

Astros manager comments on Alex Bregman’s situation

Just like Jose Altuve, Alex Bregman is undoubtedly one of the team’s pillars. He has been a force in the offensive over the past season, and everyone wishes for a reunion. Whether that’ll take place is something only time will decide.

Houston Astros team manager Joe Espada commented on the situation on Tuesday. He reiterated how much Bregman means for the organization and how they are thankful for his services for so long.

There’s no secret what he means to this team and this organization. Breggy is a winner; he’s a leader. He has all the qualities that you’re looking for from a baseball player. This is the part of the business that I don’t have much control of that, just to show my support and the fact he knows we love him and I love him.

Espada believes the final decision will depend on Bregman and what he thinks will be best for him and his family. With Winter Meetings coming up, most free agents are expected to make a decision before it. It’ll be interesting to see which team Bregman ends up joining, or if a reunion is possible.
