Will the 49ers Super Bowl window close if Brock Purdy signs a $50 million/year contract?
Rams' Puka Nacua believes Brock Purdy would choose the option to sign a contract in the region of $45 million rather than $50 million to keep the 49ers Super Bowl window open.

The number on Brock Purdy’s contract might determine whether the San Francisco 49ers can push for a Super Bowl in 2025. For the 49ers to bounce back and become a contender once more, Puka Nacua hinted that Jed York and John Lynch should lowball Purdy.
As per reports from The Athletic’s Dianna Russini, Purdy is in line for an extension in a similar ballpark as the Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott. This means Purdy can go from the lowest-earning starting quarterback to the highest-earning with an extension.
On an episode of Super Bowl winner Julian Edelman’s podcast Game With Names, Los Angeles Rams wide receiver shared his honest thoughts about Brock Purdy’s impending contract. Even though Nacua plays for the 49ers’ AFC West rivals, he wants the Bay Area franchise to be competitive. Nacua explained the amount with which the Niners can kill two birds with one stone.
I think a mid-four [$45 million]. I think so. He seems like a smart guy. I think he like… They still have a chance to be in their [Super Bowl window]. And I think, if he goes for a five, then the window closes.

49ers writer wants the team to avoid giving Brock Purdy a new contract
During the NFL Combine in March, reporters asked owner Jed York about Purdy’s contract situation. York replied that a decision was made regarding the matter midway through the 2024 season.

The Niners brass was on board with keeping Purdy. Meanwhile, 49ers beat writer Grant Cohn wants the club to avoid it. Cohn urged them to sign free agent Aaron Rodgers instead.
Remember, [Aaron] Rodgers grew up in Northern California, he played college football at Cal [Golden Bears] and expected to start his NFL career with the 49ers. Instead, they drafted Alex Smith with the first pick in the 2005 NFL Draft and Rodgers fell to the Packers where he had a Hall of Fame career.
Grant Cohn wrote
The 49ers passed on Rodgers and drafted Alex Smith back in the day. Rodgers is linked with the Pittsburgh Steelers, while the Super Bowl winners would rather play for the Minnesota Vikings. Rodgers isn’t the only alternative Cohn suggested to the 49ers. Previously, he proposed that the 49ers trade Purdy to the New Orleans Saints instead of extending his contract.
[Brock Purdy] could be the next Drew Brees. He kind of looks like Drew Brees. He’s kind of short like Drew Brees. If he wore the same uniform Drew Brees, you might actually think that Drew Brees is still on the team. You might be able to sell more tickets and call him baby Drew Brees.
Grant Cohn added
Cohn expects the Saints to hand over their 9th overall pick and take Purdy off their hands. The 49ers will then draft Shedeur Sanders if he is still available.
Purdy still has one year left on his contract. The Niners can easily wait it out to play out the remaining year and then deal with him or even place a franchise tag on him. However, legendary 49ers quarterback Joe Montana wants to see Purdy sign a contract extension.
We have interest in Brock being around here for a long, long time. He’s done so much for our organization. He’s won big games and had a little tougher task as we all did this year with some of the things that happened this year.
Joe Montana said
In his first three years with the 49ers, Purdy has appeared in 40 games (starting 36), boasting a 23-13 record. He threw 722 completions for 9518 yards, 64 touchdowns, and 27 picks, along with 127 rushes on the ground for 480 yards and 8 rushing touchdowns, leading the Niners to multiple NFC Championship games and an appearance in the 2023-24 Super Bowl.
