William Nylander found himself in trouble on Sunday after he flipped off the camera from the stands during the Toronto Maple Leafs game against the Colorado Avalanche. He would later issue an apology regarding this.
The Maple Leafs are having a mixed season. At one stage this month, the Canadian outfit had a 23-15-7 record following a 4-3 overtime win against the Avalanche at Ball Arena in Colorado.
Since then, things have gone downhill for them. They lost 6-1 against the Utah Mammoth and then suffered a crushing 6-5 overtime loss against the Vegas Golden Knights.
They bounced back from these two disappointing wins with a 4-3 victory over the Winnipeg Jets. After that, they lost 3 in a row, including a 6-3 loss against the Golden Knights during Mitch Marner‘s return to Toronto.
On Sunday, they took on the Avs at the Scotiabank Arena. Nylander was sitting out of this game due to a groin injury.
In the third period, when the Maple Leafs were 3-0 down, the camera would point towards a box in the stands. Nylander was spotted alongside Chris Tanev, Dakota Joshua, Calle Jarnkrok and Philippe Myers, who are all injured.
As the camera panned towards them, Nylander would flip off the camera. Check out a video regarding this below:

This action from him caused outrage on social media. The Swedish international would later take to his Instagram stories and apologize for his actions. In his statement, the 29-year-old called it a “moment of frustration.”
Only love for Leafs Nation. Sorry about my moment of frustration today! I didn’t mean to upset anyone. Looking forward to being back on the ice and not in the stands. Love, Willy

The Maple Leafs ended up losing the game 4-1 and suffered their 4th successive loss. This is their 6th loss in their last 7 games, leaving them with a 24-19-9 record after 52 games.
William Nylander could face consequences for his actions
William Nylander is in hot water following his actions from the stands during the Toronto Maple Leafs game against the Colorado Avalanche. According to insider Chris Johnston, the forward could face consequences for this action.

The 2024 All-Star would make an obscene gesture towards the camera while laughing and chatting with his teammates. According to Johnston, the NHL is looking at this incident. The league could punish him for this.

The NHL has previously placed some discipline on players regarding this type of action. In 2011, then-Boston Bruins defenseman Andrew Ferenc was fined $2,500.
He would raise the middle finger of his glove towards the Montreal Canadiens fans after tying the game at Bell Centre. While he humorously claimed that his finger got stuck in the glove, the NHL did not listen to him and fined him for it. Nylander could face a similar fine if the league decides to take any action.
He is the highest point scorer for the team this season. In 37 games, Nylander has 48 points (17 goals and 31 assists). However, he has now missed the previous 5 games due to his groin injury.
The Maple Leafs will be next in action on Tuesday as they face the Buffalo Sabres at Scotiabank Arena. After that, they will have 4 road games before the league has a 2-week break for the Winter Olympics in Milan, Italy.
