France had many players to thank for not ending the game with a loss against the Netherlands. A late disallowed goal for the opposition and multiple spurned chances meant that both sides had to share the points. Player of the Match N’golo Kante and France’s defensive pairing of William Saliba and Dayot Upamecano stood firm for 90 minutes.
After a monumental display against Austria, Saliba received a lot of praise. He followed up the same with another statement performance, giving fans the impression that the Arsenal man will be crucial to their success if they are to go deep in the competition’s knockout rounds. A quick look at his in-game statistics revealed that he wasn’t dribbled past even once in yesterday’s game.
Out of every outfield player on the pitch, Saliba lost possession the least number of times. He had a 99% pass completion rate and made zero fouls in the 90 minutes he played.
Surprisingly, it was only the third time in his career that he played at left centre-back, even though his performance felt like the Frenchman has been preparing for the same for ages. Saliba has helped France keep back-to-back clean sheets at the Euros.
William Saliba opens up about situation at France as fans praise Arsenal star
William Saliba has been one of the most important figures at Arsenal Football Club in recent seasons. The centre-back has been a monumental figure in defense for the Gunners and has built up quite the reputation for himself at the Etihad.
After sitting on the bench for quite some time in the French camp, his sudden inclusion in the squad for the Euros raised eyebrows. In a recent press conference, Saliba stated that it’s been difficult to grab a spot in the starting XI and that his call-up was unexpected.
The National team jersey is heavier than the club jersey. Competition is intense. Usually, it's Konate and Upamecano who start and set the bar high. We're all friends.William Saliba said in a press conference
On X, a fan called him a Rolls-Royce defender for being able to perform brilliantly while playing out of position. Another claimed that every top club in Europe will come for his signature after the tournament.
Some felt sorry for Liverpool star Ibrahima Konate, who was replaced by Saliba at the tournament. Following Saliba’s recent displays, it is unlikely that the Liverpool man will get back into France’s starting line-up anytime soon.
