Arsenal and France defender William Saliba is one of the best in his position throughout Europe. The 23-year-old center back has shown maturity and control far beyond that of his age, earning him an undisputed spot in the starting XI for both club and country. That being said, no player goes through their career without making a few embarrassing errors, and even more so for defenders.
The player was singled out against Belgium as the two sides came up against each other in the Nations League. Caught in a 1v1 with Lois Openda, the defender embarrassed himself as he made an attempt to chase down the striker. Openda took the ball away from the rushing center back, who lost his balance and ended up taking out the forward.
The referee promptly pointed to the spot, giving Belgium a chance to take the lead in the 23rd minute. Aston Villa player Youri Tielemans stepped up to take the kick, but ended up sending his shot above the bar.
After being let off the hook, William Saliba put in a shift to make sure that his side didn’t concede more than one goal on the night. Saliba could only watch as Openda scored past Mike Maignan from point blank.

Rival fans made a meal out of William Saliba’s unfortunate slip as the Frenchman conceded a penalty against Belgium. A fan commented that Openda truly made the Arsenal star look like a fool as he slipped inside the penalty area. Another added that Saliba is hyped up way too much by Arsenal fans and that he only performs well in Mikel Arteta‘s system.
However, French fans did not remain silent either, as one fan called out a Liverpool supporter of all people for laughing at someone ‘slipping’. This was in reference to Steven Gerrard‘s infamous slip, which ultimately ended up costing them the League title. Fans spammed angles of Saliba’s error from all angles as they laughed at the young defender.
Despite Saliba’s mistake, a brace from Randal Kolo Muani made sure that France won both of their games in the international break. As things stand, Les Bleus are second in Group 2 of League A with 9 points from four games. It is exciting to see France performing well without star man Kylian Mbappe and former player Antoine Griezmann. The latter recently announced his international retirement while Mbappe is out with a minute injury.
