Willson Contreras lost his cool on Monday night. In the matchup between the St. Louis Cardinals and the Pittsburgh Pirates, the first baseman was involved in a heated confrontation with the umpire, which got him tossed out of the game. In this moment, he ended up hitting his own coach with the bat in his face.

The incident took place in the bottom of the 7th inning when the Cardinals were 6-5 up against the Pirates. With one out in the inning, Contreras went up against Yohan Ramirez and worked up an 0-2 count.

A 98 mph pitch from Ramirez would land just inside the imaginary batter’s box used for the broadcast, indicating a third strike. The home plate umpire, Derek Thomas, would make the correct call and called a third strike, resulting in Contreras being struck out.

The Cardinals’ star started walking away from the scene. However, as the replays rolled by, the announcer expressed that someone had been tossed from the game. The cameras then zoomed in on Contreras, heavily exchanging some words with umpire Thomas. The 33-year-old would get into the face of the official and kept on arguing.

Cardinals’ manager Oliver Marmol tried to stop his player and held him back. A few more of the Cardinals’ stuff came out from the dugout in order to restrain him from snapping at the official.

While he was being dragged away from the commotion, Marmol was seen having some words with the umpires. During this, Contreras threw his bat in frustration. In doing so, he ended up hitting one of his own coaches, Brant Brown, in the face. A few moments later, a bucket of bubble gum was tossed on the field.

While the Cardinals ended up winning the game 7-6, they ended the night without Willson Contreras or their manager, Oliver Marmol, as both of them were tossed from the game.

As per reports, Contreras claimed that he did not argue regarding his pitch and simply told Derek Thomas to call it from both sides, as he believed that the umpire was missing some pitches for them.

I didn’t argue any pitch. All I said was, ‘Call the pitches on both sides because you’re missing for us.’ Then, I turned around. The next thing I hear, he threw me out. There’s no reason for it. Apparently, he heard something [he thought] I said. I did not say that

Willson Contreras told the reporters

Manager Oliver Marmol would agree with his player and defend him.

We’ll have to dive into it to make sure what Willson’s saying is what happened, but I believe him

Oliver Marmol said

Meanwhile, the crew chief, Jordan Baker, told Jeff Jones of Belleville News-Democrat that Contreras and Marmol used some “vulgar” language against Thomas, which resulted in their ejection. He also expressed that Contreras did make some contact with the home plate umpire as well.

Baker also expressed that they will review the tape that the office sends them and then report it to Major League Baseball. The league will then handle the matter. Meanwhile, Contreras later claimed that he apologized to Brown for accidentally hitting him in the face.

A few days ago, Seattle Mariners star Victor Robles came under fire after losing his cool. He would throw his bat in anger at pitcher Joey Estes after he got hit by the pitch.

The league would later hand him a 10-game suspension for this. It now remains to be seen whether the league will take a similar action against Contreras or not.
