Iga Swiatek has been one of the most dominant players in the women’s circuit, perhaps just after World No.1 Aryna Sabalenka. The Polish star has been in her best form in recent months, which has seen her win two titles in four tournaments. Her coach, Wim Fissette, has highlighted one trait that has brought out the best of her on the court.
Swiatek was the best player in the WTA in the first half of the 2024 season. In fact, she won five titles in just six months, including the Madrid Open, Italian Open, and French Open. But after testing positive for trimetazidine in August, her performance on the court began to drop as the season went on.
She also parted ways with her former coach, Tomasz Wiktorowski, and brought in Fissette to help her get back to her best. But it took more than six months for their partnership to achieve success. The 24-year-old struggled on the court with her game, not reaching a tournament final for over a year.
It was at the 2025 Wimbledon Championship that the World No.2 finally broke the title-less run on tour. She defeated World No.4 Amanda Anisimova 6-0, 6-0 to win her first grass-court Grand Slam at the All England Club. A month later, she claimed her first Cincinnati Open title after beating Jasmine Paolini in the final.
During an interview with Sport, Fissette was asked if he sometimes has a disagreement with Swiatek off the court. The former Qinwen Zheng’s coach revealed that the former World No.1 is a bit stubborn, but it’s a natural trait that champions have, which propels them to win titles on tour:
She’s a bit stubborn, but it’s natural that when you achieve success in a certain way, you want to stick with it. It’s not easy to convince yourself to do things a little differently. Sometimes you have to fail a few times. During training, Iga isn’t the kind of person who immediately accepts everything I say; she’ll think about it, sometimes discuss it with other team members, and then finally give it a try. And once she believes in something and feels it’s working, she incorporates it into her system quite quickly.
Swiatek backed Fissette during her rough spell on tour this season, particularly after sha failed to defend any clay-court title and dropped to World No.7 in the WTA rankings. Their partnership has grown stronger in the last few months and Swiatek has begun to play with the same flair she did early last year.
Wim Fissette lauds Iga Swiatek for her professionalism regardless of the results
Iga Swiatek is known to be one of the top professional players in the WTA as she always gives her best on the court and accepts defeats despite the circumstances. At the US Open, she suffered a straight-sets loss against Amanda Anisimova in the quarter-finals, just two months after beating the American star in London.

During the aforementioned interview, Wim Fissette revealed that one thing that has stood out about Swiatek since joining her team was her ability to remain focused and professional regardless of the result:
What’s unique is that Iga enters every day with the same intensity, regardless of the result or tournament. I always see the same intensity, focus, and professionalism in her. It’s extraordinary. Even after winning Wimbledon, she returned to the court a few days later to work with the same desire to be the best version of herself.
Swiatek is currently in Seoul for the Korean Open as she begins her Asian swing campaign. She received a bye at the tournament as the top seed and will face Sorana Cirstea or Zhu Lin in the second round. The 24-year-old is projected to face Emma Raducanu in the quarter-finals of the tournament.
