It’s Russia vs. Ukraine in SW19. Russian-born Kazakh star Elena Rybakina takes on the Ukrainian no.1, Elina Svitolina in the quarterfinal. 

Elina Svitolina blitzed through Wang Xinyu of China 6-2, 6-1 in under an hour. She will be fighting to reach her third overall and second consecutive Wimbledon semifinal. After a nerve-wracking match in the first round against Magda Linette, things have been smooth sailing and she hasn’t dropped a set since.

Elena Rybakina qualified for the quarterfinal after her opponent, Anna Kalinskaya, was forced to retire due to injury. The match is sure to be emotional as Svitolina is constantly in support of her country amidst the ongoing war with Russia.

It is worth noting that both of Svitolina’s wins came in three sets with both matches going down to the wire. Rybakina on the other hand, secured two straight sets victories against against the Ukrainian. Their last meeting was at the French Open this year in a one-sided match that went the way of the Kazakh, 6-4, 6-3.

Svitolina is seeded 21 in the tournament while Rybakina is the 4th seed and also the only top 5 player left.

Although Svitolina is more experienced and in exceptional form, her fitness may be in question. She has only played one three-setter this tournament and it is yet to be seen how she will fare in long matches.

Rybakina seems to be the clear favorite as she has already won the championship once. Her game, too, is better optimized for grass courts which gives her an edge over Svitolina, who has returned after starting a family. Svitolina is still sure to put up a valiant fight as she often does and it will be an interesting and exciting encounter.
