2022 Wimbledon champion Elena Rybakina brushed aside Romanian qualifier Elena-Gabriela Ruse 6-3, 6-1 to earn a place in the second round. The Kazakhstani fell sick at the Berlin Ladies Open a few weeks ago but was in resounding form on Tuesday.

Now, she will look to beat Germany’s Laura Siegemund in the second round. The German World No.72 has been on encouraging form of late winning six of her last ten matches on Tour. Despite not being a favorite, she hopes to put on a strong show against the World No.4.

Elena Rybakina began the season by winning her first title at the Brisbane International in which she defeated Aryna Sabalenka. She failed to consolidate her victory as she exited in the second of the Australian Open respectively. Rybakina bounced back at Abu Dhabi claiming the title. Illness forced her to withdraw from the Indian Wells Masters.

She reached the finals of Miami after missing the first Sunshine Doubles but lost to an in-form Danielle Collins. During the clay season, she was the only player to beat Iga Swiatek, defeating the World No.1 at Stuttgart to claim the title. After exiting in the semifinals of the Madrid Open she withdrew from the Italian Open due to illness. She began her grass season brightly reaching the Berlin Ladies Open but illness came to haunt her again and forced her to withdraw mid-way through her match against Victoria Azarenka in the quarterfinals.

On the other hand, Laura Siegemund’s season started on the wrong foot despite her second-round exit at the Australian Open. The German failed to qualify for the Dubai Tennis Championship and Indian Wells. She managed to qualify at Miami but exited in the second round after losing to Jelena Ostapenko.

During the clay season, she failed to get passed the second round of the Madrid Open and Rome. She managed to reach the quarterfinals in Morocco but lost to Viktoriya Tomova. She didn’t win a single match at the French Open and Eastbourne. However, she defeated Kateryna Baindi 6-4, 6-1 in the opening round of Wimbledon.
