Second seed Coco Gauff will be up against 19th seed Emma Navarro in an all-American clash in the 4th round of Wimbledon. The current US Open champion, Gauff, is coming into this match after a comfortable straight-set win over local favorite Sonay Kartal.

On the other hand, Navarro had to dig deep against Diana Shnaider in the third round, overturning a one-set deficit to win 2-6, 6-3, 6-4. The 23-year-old is coming into this Championship after a semi-final performance in the Bad Homburg Open.

It is only the second time that Navarro has made the Round of 16 in a Grand Slam tournament. The first time was just over a month ago at Roland Garros, where she lost to Aryna Sabalenka.

Coco Gauff has come into this match with the most ideal preparation possible. The 20-year-old has lost only 10 games across three matches so far at Wimbledon. These matches have come against Caroline Dolehide (another all-American affair), Anca Todoni, and Sonay Kartal.

On the other hand, Emma Navarro also had comfortable wins in her first two rounds against Wang Qiang and Naomi Osaka. However, she was in a massive battle against Diana Shnaider but overcame the Russian in three sets.

Gauff has a 39-15 record in 2024 compared to Navarro’s 34-10. The younger American has won six out of eight matches so far this season on grass. Alternatively, the elder American has a 4-1 record on grass this season, mainly due to her semi-final appearance in Bad Homburg before Wimbledon.

Gauff has already improved from her Wimbledon showing of the previous year. She had lost in the first round to Sofia Kenin.

Emma Navarro and Coco Gauff have played only once against each other. Their meeting took place in the first week of the 2024 season in Auckland, where Gauff comfortably dispatched the elder American in straight sets, 6-3, 6-1.

However, the expectations are totally different for Navarro now. She is now reaching the second week of Grand Slams, which is a massive improvement in her career. If she can achieve a major scalp, especially against a fellow American, it will take her game to the next level.

In the grand scheme of things, Gauff is the heavy favorite in this match. She hasn’t had a great history at Wimbledon, losing in the 4th round in 2019 and 2021.

Navarro can take psychological advantage of the fact that Gauff hasn’t progressed beyond the Round of 16. Whatever happens in this match, there will be mind games from both sides of the court.
