Emma Raducanu, despite winning a Grand Slam in 2021, got her first top-ten victory just last week against Jessica Pegula in Eastbourne, displaying an improvement in form after her return to the circuit. As the home favorite in Wimbledon, she seems to be at her best again, dispatching Renata Zarazua and Elise Mertens in straight sets in the first couple of rounds. She now faces Maria Sakkari, whom she had defeated en route to her US Open title almost three years ago.
It has been a forgettable year for the former World No.3, Maria Sakkari, as she has not won a match in her last three tournaments. Her best result this year came at Indian Wells where she reached the final, eventually losing 4-6, 0-6 against Iga Swiatek.
At Grand Slam events, Sakkari’s results did not meet expectations, with her bowing out in the second round at the Australian Open and the first round at the French Open. Matching her best result at Wimbledon, she has made it to the third round for the fourth time in her career.

Raducanu and Sakkari have only faced off once on the professional tour at the 2021 US Open, which the former won as a qualifier without dropping a set. Since then, Raducanu suffered multiple setbacks physically, a major one being a wrist injury that kept her out of the tour for a good part of two years.
Sakkari’s journey, on the other hand, has been inconsistent as she has not impacted the Grand Slam stage but has maintained her ranking spot within the top 10. This year, Raducanu has had results on grass, making the quarterfinal in Eastbourne and the semifinal in Nottingham.

In her first two rounds, she received overwhelming crowd support as the British audience swarmed the center court and court 1 to cheer her on. Sakkari, although seeded 9, may be heading into the match as the underdog given her form and the lack of crowd backing that she may have to experience.
