Carlos Alcaraz will continue his Wimbledon title defence when he squares off against Frances Tiafoe in the third round on Friday (July 5). The former World No. 1 has dominated his last two matches and will be hoping to do the same against the American.

Tiafoe has been struggling to find consistent form this season, highlighted by his especially poor clay season. That said, he has managed to regroup himself at the All England Club, as seen by his comeback win against Italian starlet Matteo Arnaldi in the first round.

Carlos Alcaraz began the season with a quarterfinal exit at the Australian Open but failed to make an impression at the Argentina Open and Rio. He managed to find his rhythm at Indian Wells, beating Daniil Medvedev in the final to defend his title.

After success at Indian Wells, Alcaraz exited the Miami Open in the quarterfinals. During the clay season, a forearm injury saw him play only two tournaments out of a possible five. The Spaniard reached the quarterfinals of the Madrid Open and then showed terrific form to win the French Open.

While began his grass swing by failing to defend his Queen’s Club Championships title, he has performed better in Wimbledon, beating Australian Alexander Vukic 7-6(3), 7-5, 6-2 in the second round and Estonian Mark Lajal 7-6(3), 7-5, 6-2.

On the other hand, Frances Tiafoe has had an inconsistent season. He reached the second round at the Australian Open and the semifinals at the Delray Beach Open but failed to get past the third of every other tournament till March. His best performance came at the ATP 250 event in Houston, where he finished as the runner-up after losing to Ben Shelton.

At the Madrid Open and Rome, he made opening-round exits. He competed at the Lyon Open in preparation for the French Open but could not get past the second round, the same stage he crashed out at the Roland Garros later.

The 26-year-old failed to defend his Stuttgart title losing to eventual champion Jack Draper in the quarterfinals. He came from two sets down to beat Matteo Arnaldi in his opening match at Wimbledon and backed it up with a fine 7-6(5), 6-1, 6-3 win over Borna Coric in the second round.

Alcaraz has played Tiafoe twice in his career, with both winning once each. The last time they faced off was in the semifinals of the 2022 US Open, where the Spaniard won in five sets.

Alcaraz heads into the match as the favorite because of how well he has been adapting to grass courts and also due to Tiafoe’s inconsistent form. Such has been the nature of the American’s year that he took a step done to play at the ATP Challenger event in Cagliari in April, where he ended up losing his opening match.

The 21-year-old has a better experience playing on Wimbledon’s Center Court and should be able to register another win and continue his title defence.
