Aryna Sabalenka vs. Jelena Ostapenko: Match Preview

Aryna Sabalenka is chasing her fourth title of the season. She started her campaign for the season at the Brisbane International, where she defended her title by defeating Marta Kostyuk.

The Belarusian ace, however, failed to lift the Australian Open as Elena Rybakina beat her in the final to win her career’s second Grand Slam title. After skipping the two WTA 1000s on the Middle East swing, Sabalenka completed the Sunshine Double, defeating Rybakina in Indian Wells and Coco Gauff in Miami.

But since then, Sabalenka has yet to reach another final. She lost every clay-court tournament before reaching the semifinal, including at the French Open, where, after losing to Diana Shnaider in the quarterfinals, she said she wanted to “quit tennis”.

Before arriving at Wimbledon, the 28-year-old lost to eventual runner-up Jessica Pegula at the Berlin Open. In the ongoing event, she beat Teodora Kostovic and McCartney Kessler in the first and second rounds, respectively.

Jelena Ostapenko, on the other hand, defeated Harriet Dart in the first round and later went past Antonia Ruzic in the second round. Ostapenko also played one warm-up tournament on grass before arriving at SW19. She played the Eastbourne International, where Tatjana Maria defeated her in the semifinals.

Ostapenko, the winner of nine singles titles from 18 finals, hasn’t yet reached a title clash this year. The last time she won a title was at last year’s Stuttgart Open, when she defeated Sabalenka. She played three finals last year, winning in Stuttgart and Linz, and losing in Doha.

Aryna Sabalenka vs. Jelena Ostapenko: Match Prediction

Sabalenka is a three-time semifinalist at Wimbledon, reaching the stage in 2021, 2023, and 2025. Last year, eventual runner-up Amanda Anisimova defeated her. Wimbledon is the only Major where Sabalenka has never reached the championship clash.

Sabalenka also has never won a title on grass. She has so far played two finals on the surface: the 2018 Eastbourne International (lost to Caroline Wozniacki) and the 2022 Rosmalen Grass Court Championships (lost to Ekaterina Alexandrova).

Ostapenko, however, has won two titles from three finals on grass. She won the 2021 Eastbourne International (beat Anett Kontaveit) and lost to Petra Kvitova in the same tournament the following season. In 2023, she defeated Barbora Krejcikova in the Birmingham Classic.

At Wimbledon, the 2017 French Open champion has played one semifinal but is a doubles finalist (reached last year). Last year, she suffered an opening-round exit, losing to home favorite Sonay Kartal.

When it comes to head-to-head matchups, Sabalenka holds a 3-1 lead. The lone win that Ostapenko registered was in their last meeting, in the final of the Stuttgart Open. They have never faced each other on grass before.

Match prediction: Aryna Sabalenka to win in three sets.
