Coco Gauff has previously won the US Open and Roland Garros. Her best result at the Australian Open was in 2024 when she reached the semifinal. However, she has never progressed beyond the fourth round at Wimbledon.

Although she announced herself at Wimbledon in 2019 by defeating five-time champion Venus Williams in straight sets on her main-draw debut as a 15-year-old, Gauff has since struggled to replicate that form on grass.

Heading into this year’s Championships, the American had not won a match on the surface in two years. However, Gauff has now made it to the fourth round, where she will meet Belinda Bencic. Bencic was a semifinalist at the tournament last year, where she lost to eventual champion Iga Swiatek.

Belinda Bencic vs. Coco Gauff: Match Preview

Grass has historically been Coco Gauff‘s most challenging surface. While she is regarded as one of the best movers on tour, her athleticism has not consistently translated into success on grass, where the lower, skidding bounce and quicker pace reduce the time available to construct points.

Gauff’s extreme western forehand grip, which generates heavy topspin and is highly effective on slower surfaces like clay, is less ideal for grass, where flatter, more penetrating groundstrokes are often rewarded.

Her forehand can also become vulnerable when rushed by the low bounce, making it more difficult for her to dictate rallies. In addition, Gauff has often found it difficult to strike the right balance between aggression and defense on grass, a surface that typically favors first-strike tennis, precise serving, and efficient net play over extended baseline exchanges.

Gauff’s serve has also long been one of the more inconsistent aspects of her game across all surfaces, particularly her second serve. Those issues become even more pronounced on grass, where the faster surface gives opponents ample opportunity to attack weaker serves and immediately take control of rallies.

Gauff survived a major scare against Solana Sierra in the second round—where the Argentine served for the match in the deciding set and held a 7-4 lead in the deciding 10-point tiebreak. The 22-year-old was then forced to dig deep once again as she battled past compatriot Claire Liu in three sets to reach the fourth round at Wimbledon for the fourth time in her career.

Belinda Bencic, on the other hand, had to win a third-set tiebreak against Anna Kalinskaya after previously leading by a break twice in the deciding set to reach the fourth round for a fifth time.

Belinda Bencic vs. Coco Gauff: Match Prediction

Belinda Bencic is a naturally elite grass-court player whose flat, aggressive baseline game is beautifully engineered for the surface. The Swiss tennis player won her maiden WTA 500 title on grass at Eastbourne and has reached four more finals on this surface. She has advanced to the fourth round at Wimbledon five times, including a strong run to the second week at the tournament last year.

Although Coco Gauff leads the head-to-head against Bencic 5-2, this will mark their first meeting on grass, and Bencic will be an extremely tough opponent for her. The pair last met in the quarterfinals at the Miami Open this year, where Gauff defeated Bencic in three sets.

Match prediction: Belinda Bencic to win in three sets.
