Iga Swiatek vs. Alexandra Eala: Match Preview

Iga Swiatek, who double-bageled Amanda Anisimova in last year’s Wimbledon, is chasing her first title of the season in the ongoing tournament. The last time she clinched a title was at the 2025 Korea Open. She played in four finals last year, winning three titles.

But this year, she has not yet reached a final and, in fact, has made just one semifinal. It was at the Italian Open, where eventual champion Elina Svitolina knocked her out. Before arriving at Wimbledon, Swiatek suffered an opening-round exit for the second time this season.

At the Bad Homburg Open, where she reached her career’s first grass-court final last year, Swiatek lost to Emma Navarro. Also, for the second consecutive season, the four-time French Open champion failed to reach a final on clay.

Swiatek, in her first round at Wimbledon, overcame doubles No.2 Taylor Townsend and broke down in tears after the tough win. But in her second-round match, the Pole breezed past fellow former World No.1 Karolina Pliskova.

Alexandra Eala, on the other hand, ousted Renata Zarazua in the first round, while in the second round, she came from a set down to knock out Maya Joint, who ended 23-time Grand Slam singles champion Serena Williams‘ run with a three-set win in the first round.

Eala has so far played just one tour-level final. In last year’s Eastbourne International, the Filipino lost to Joint. The 21-year-old won this year’s Birmingham Classic (WTA 125 event). Before this Wimbledon, the only time Eala made the second round of a Major was in her maiden US Open last year.

In this year’s Australian Open, Swiatek’s run ended in the quarterfinals, while Eala lost in the first round. At the French Open, Eala suffered an opening-round exit, while the 25-year-old reached the fourth round.

While Swiatek played just one warm-up event before Wimbledon, Eala played three tour-level tournaments on grass. She lost to Iva Jovic in the round of 16 of the Queen’s Club Championships, but made the semifinal of the Berlin Open, losing to eventual champion Linda Noskova. In Bad Homburg, she lost in the opening round.

Both Swiatek and Eala will be facing a seeded player for the first time in the tournament. Swiatek, the third seed, and Eala, the 29th seed, are tied at 1-1 in the head-to-head matchup.

In last year’s Miami Open, Eala knocked out the six-time Grand Slam champion in the quarterfinals before losing to eventual runner-up Jessica Pegula in the semifinals. Swiatek took her revenge in the second round of last year’s Madrid Open.

Match prediction: Iga Swiatek to win in three sets.
