Jasmine Paolini was in tears after securing her place in the fourth round of Wimbledon on Saturday (July 4). The Italian star has not been in top form in the singles this season, with much of her success coming in doubles alongside Sara Errani. She will now aim to reach her second Wimbledon quarter-final when she takes on Alexandra Eala.
Eala has been the biggest revelation at the All England Club. The Filipino made history by becoming the first woman in her country to reach the fourth round of Wimbledon. However, she has the opportunity to extend her record on tour by becoming the first Philippine to reach a Grand Slam quarter-final since Felicisimo Ampon at the 1953 French Open.

Jasmine Paolini vs. Alexandra Eala: Match Preview
Since November last year, Jasmine Paolini has been through a tough spell on the court. The Italian star dropped out of the top 10 for the first time in almost two years earlier this year, and she’s yet to reach a singles tournament final. In fact, before arriving at Wimbledon, she failed to pick up a singles win at the Eastbourne International, losing to Tatjana Maria in the opening round.
Her Grand Slam performances have been great, earning just three wins from the Australian Open and the French Open. But at the All England Club, she claimed her opening round victory over American Robin Montgomery 0-6, 6-4, 7-5 and then overcame Viktorija Golubic in straight sets before thumping Maria Sakkari with a 6-1, 6-2 win.

On the other hand, Alexandra Eala has had one of the most memorable seasons on tour. The 21-year-old built on the momentum she gained last year by winning this year’s Birmingham Classics (WTA 125 event). Before this Wimbledon, the only time Eala made the second round of a Major was in her maiden US Open last year.
She opened her account at the grass-court Grand Slam by outdoing Renata Zarazua in the first round, while in the second round, she came from a set down to knock out Maya Joint, who ended 23-time Grand Slam singles champion Serena Williams‘ run with a three-set win in the first round. The 29th seed then dethroned defending champion Iga Swiatek 7-6(9), 6-2 to reach the fourth round at Wimbledon.
Jasmine Paolini vs. Alexandra Eala: Match Prediction
Two years ago, Jasmine Paolini made it to the final of the Wimbledon Championships, just weeks after doing the same at the French Open. But like at Roland Garros, she failed to win the championship, losing to Barbora Krejcikova in straight sets. The three-time WTA champion will be seeking another Cinderella run.

She has the experience to pull it off again, as she has previously struggled on the court. When at her best, she can be very good on the court and unbeatable sometimes. However, she faces Alexandra Eala, who has gained so much confidence after defeating Iga Swiatek in the third round.
Eala leads their head-to-head record 1-0 on tour. Their lone meeting came at this year’s Dubai Tennis Championships, a WTA 1000 tournament, where the Filipino crushed the Italian star in straight sets. Can she be able to pull another victory against Paolini? That’s completely possible, but with Paolini in her current physical shape and form, it will make it very hard for the 21-year-old on Monday (July 6).
Match prediction: Jasmine Paolini to win in three sets.
