The New York Giants have played nine games so far and currently sit dead last in the NFL. That’s what five home losses and the league’s second worse offense gets you. But it also makes a much better defense look bad, something that was the blueprint of former defensive coordinator Don ‘Wink’ Martindale.
The now-Michigan defensive coordinator was instrumental in constructing the defense that. in his first year, showed a major improvement, but last year struggled. Those struggles were partly due to injuries and the defense having to play too often as the offense struggled.
Last season, they had a similar record at the same time. But statistics say the defense has improved as the offense continues to struggle. Martindale was let go after last season, but looking at the New York Giants‘ record this season, he did not hesitate to take a shot at them.
The Michigan defensive coordinator said this during a press conference at the university. With those specific words, it was a continuation of what he feels about Giants head coach Brian Daboll. The current head coach and his former DC would often clash during team meetings.
"It's a lot better than being in some places that are 2-7"

It went from bad to worse when Brian Daboll undermined his DC by firing two of his trusted assistants. Then the New York Post reported that Martindale had resigned, even though the franchise later mentioned that they ‘mutually parted ways’. Wink Martindale taking shots suggests he is trying to prove that he was not the problem.
Wink Martindale’s words put blame on Brian Daboll, Joe Schoen and Daniel Jones
Last season, the defense had their own struggles compounded by an inept offense. With the firings of his two assistants, Brian Daboll tried to make it look as if it was Wink Martindale’s defense that was the problem.
But with the way the New York Giants offense is struggling, the owners have to take a hard look into what is actually wrong. The franchise took the decision to continue to entrust Daniel Jones as the starting quarterback, despite all his previous struggles.
Then they drafted in wide receiver Malik Nabers, who has played well so far. But even with all those improvements, the franchise is at the bottom of the pit. That means, the decisions of Daboll, GM Joe Schoen and Jones have not made any difference.
In their remaining eight games, two are against similar bottom rung teams. But the rest are against playoff hopefuls. That puts them on the path of having a worse record than last season and it would be a time for Don Martindale to speak up again.
