Richard Gasquet has only participated in three further hard court events since commencing his season at the ATP Melbourne 250. After a late start to the US Open Series, Gasquet advanced to the main draw of the Cincinnati Masters with victories over Fernando Verdasco and Jaume Munar. It was the end of the road for him as he lost in straight sets against Andy Murray in the first round. In the round of 32, Gasquet got through a tough encounter against Egor Gerasimov, winning two tight tiebreaks. In the final 16, he defeated Dan Evans, the number three seed, in two sets.

Emil Ruusuvuori made an impact in the Miami Open earlier this year, reaching the fourth round, and then the semifinals at the Atlanta Open last month, before losing in a tight three-set struggle to Barndon Nakashima. The Finn had a solid start to the week by winning in straight sets against American Denis Kudla, with one break of service in each set. He advanced to the final 16 after defeating the interesting styles of Bublik in the second round. In the last 16, he defeated Frenchman Benoit Paire to advance to the quarterfinals.
