When hordes of new fans started watching WNBA games, they believed that the league was full of jealous women who would not accept that Caitlin Clark was their ‘golden goose’. Commissioner Cathy Engelbert has had to balance the emotions and let the games continue.

The former Deloitte CEO was brought in to help steer a league that was losing money every year. She seems to have done a decent job after seemingly convincing Clark and fellow college star Angel Reese to resume their rivalry in the league.

Both of them could have waited another year, but the commissioner has distributed top college stars to enter the draft in subsequent years. Those unofficial moves have helped the league grow at an unprecedented rate.

The 60-year-old has brought in expansion teams and is helping the league add sources of revenue with which it can turn a profit. Currently, at the All-Star weekend in Indianapolis, she has been engaging with players over details of the next CBA.

To many, it became apparent that Engelbert was not bending to the players’ demands, and they are likely headed for a lockout. Her relationship with players was suspected to have soured. However, StudBudz’s 72-hour live stream proved otherwise.

They had a party for players, coaches, staff, and other invitees after the 3-point contest ended. As the StudBudz pair of Courtney Williams and Natisha Hiedeman approached Cathy Engelbert to be a part of their stream, she gladly obliged.

She praised their venture and started to vibe with them. Then, when Crime Mob‘s ‘Knuck If You Buck’ blared through the speakers, she broke out her dance moves, leaving players and other onlookers stunned.

Fans in awe as Cathy Engelbert breaks out her dance moves

After all the rumors of having a tense relationship with players, the clip of Cathy Engelbert dancing with two of them at the All-Star party went viral. Fans could not believe the 60-year-old would break a leg in that fashion.

She did not seem bothered by what the media and naysayers would say. The WNBA commissioner’s intentions to have a good time with her players, coaches, and staff were appreciated on social media, examples of which are below.

Commissioners of other leagues, such as the NBA’s Adam Silver would at most appear on a podcast for a brief amount of time. Fans know how Silver operates and were surprised that Cathy Engelbert did something her boss would likely never do.

Fans hope this might have an impact on CBA negotiations. However, the NBA gave her enough to leave her high-profile job at Deloitte. The last thing she would do is to give in to players demands at the expense of the league and its owners’ revenue.

Cathy Engelbert should be worried about Caitlin Clark’s injuries

Cathy Engelbert wants the league to continue growing at the electric pace it did last season. For that to happen, she needs the league’s most marketable star to play every game. Whenever Caitlin Clark has been injured, the league has witnessed a 50% drop in viewership ratings.

So far, the reigning rookie of the year has missed 11 games. It is unclear how long she will be out after her latest injury setback. If this continues, it might turn out to be a headache for the commissioner.

She cannot present a league to potential investors which struggles to maintain ratings, ticket and merchandise sales whenever its most famous player is out. The WNBA needs Clark to continue drawing fans over the years, until the new league of fans start to appreciate the rest of the players.

The process has started this season, as All-Star fan votes for Napheesa Collier, Paige Bueckers, A’ja Wilson, Sabrina Ionescu and others were encouraging. This time, the disparity between votes was not that evident. That is proof that fans are starting to accept the league.
