Sheryl Swoopes slams Stephen A. Smith in WNBA Rookie of the Year candidate Caitlin Clark controversy
The WNBA has never seen this much controversy around it. With Caitlin Clark and Angel Reese headlining the transcendent popularity of the league, fans, both new and old, are split on their support. It seems the same is true about the legends of the game. Stephen A. Smith recently called out Hall of Famer Sheryl Swoopes for disregarding one of those rookies.
The comment from the ESPN host did not sit well with the Hall of Famer. The 4-time champion took to her official X account to reply to videos showing the ESPN analyst calling her out. In her tweet, she blasted Smith with a brutal rebuttal, indirectly citing Freedom of Speech.
You talk about whomever and whatever you want to on your podcast. Correct? So why can't I? Also, did you listen to the ENTIRE episode? NOPE! I have a personal relationship with these players, and they deserve recognition as well.Sheryl Swoopes via X
This is, in some way, an indirect shot at Stephen A. Smith. Indirect, as one, Swoopes does not stand on her point that she found other players to be the reason for the success of the Indiana Fever and not Rookie of the Year candidate Caitlin Clark. Secondly, she did not respond to Smith’s official X account. The video she replied to was on a fan account.
This means there is a high chance that Smith won’t even hear about this retaliation. It seems she took the safest path to keep her from directly getting involved with the analyst. This could mean she deliberately does not want to talk about the Indiana Fever rookie.
Caitlin Clark’s efforts might force veterans to eat their words
Sheryl Swoopes first made headlines when she disregarded what Caitlin Clark was doing at Iowa by suggesting her game would not translate to the WNBA. In the initial part of the WNBA season, Swoopes was right, as Clark struggled to get going. However, as the season progressed, the 22-year-old is playing lights out. Not necessarily from the shooting range, but at least with her playmaking.
So much so that most of the veterans, players, and analysts who were initially skeptical are switching over. Some have even touted her as being a generational player. With a passing ability never seen before, she is helping her Indiana Fever climb the overall standings. That is, even though her scoring has yet to reach her college levels.
Add to that, her Rookie of the Year rival Angel Reese has lost three of her last four games. Analysts and veterans had touted playoff positioning to be the determining factor. Now, the Chicago Sky are in danger of missing out despite Reese’s double-doubles. Veterans like Swoopes might have to eat their words.
