WNBA legend, Sue Bird made some comments regarding the 2024 WNBA Rookie of The Year Award involving the Indiana Fever star, Caitlin Clark. Notably, Clark and the Chicago Sky star, Angel Reese are battling it out this WNBA season for the ROTY Award, with both stars tipped to win it by various experts.
Bird has a simple system in place for selecting the Rookie of the Year. She stated that this year she will choose the Indiana Fever’s Caitlin Clark over the Chicago Sky’s Angel Reese. This is because she prefers to use the “eye test” rather than individual statistics or team records. Also, Bird insisted that Clark has been “wonderful” to watch alongside former USA Soccer legend, Megan Rapinoe.
I have Caitlin [Clark] as ROTY… I don't do the stat comparison… it can help when things are close… I just do the eye test, and to me [Caitlin Clark] is Rookie of the Year.Sue Brid to Megan Rapinoe
In addition, Clark started her debut WNBA season a bit slow but quickly adapted to her new surroundings as time went by, being one of the most crucial players for the Fever.
It’s important to note that, Clark averaged 18.5 points, 6.3 rebounds, and 11.4 assists in her final ten games before the midseason break. During that run, she also dished out 19 assists in a loss to the Dallas Wings, seemingly closing the gap to Sky’s Angel Reese. It will be interesting to watch who snatches the WNBA ROTY 2024 Award this season.
Caitlin Clark opens up on “ending” Indiana Fever’s playoff drought
Ever since the Indiana Fever acquired the rookie sensation, Caitlin Clark, she has been one of the most influential players this WNBA season. Notably, Clark is tipped to win the WNBA 2024 ROTY Award. However, Clark recently opened up in an interview with Keith Murphy of SoundOFF on ending the Indiana Fever’s playoff drought.
Obviously we’re in playoff contention, We’re in position to have a playoff spot, and that’s our goal. We haven’t been there since 2016, so these last 15 games, 16 games, it’s going to be really important for us...it’s going to be fun. Obviously competing for a couple of those last spots to get into the playoffs.Caitlin Clark on SoundOFF
Most importantly, since the team’s previous postseason appearance, the Fever has had four different head coaches. They also have a chance to surpass their highest single-season win total of 13, which they set back in the 2016 postseason season.
A major factor in that success is Clark. She is tied for 11th in scoring (17.1 points per game) and leads the WNBA in assists per game (8.2). It remains to be seen what happens next with the Indiana Fever in the coming months in the WNBA.
