Brittney Griner has finally spoken about the incident at the airport calling out her team, the Phoenix Mercury for letting such harassment happen in the first place.
Back in June, Brittney Griner was subjected to harassment by a YouTuber, Alex Stein who approached Griner and her Phoenix Mercury teammates at the Forth Worth International Airport and verbally harassed Griner spewing a flurry of slurs at her taunting her imprisonment in Russia with him even asking whether Griner had slept with Vladimir Putin to get out of prison.
The two-time Olympic gold medallist aired her concerns and opinion on the manner during a team video call: “I’ll say this. I think we should have already had the option to use a different airline, a more private airline, charter flights. It’s a shame that it had to get to rock bottom because I feel like waiting for something to happen and then making a change.”
Before the season started the WNBA had guaranteed that Griner would be getting extra attention from the league in terms of providing her safety and promised to set up protocols to prevent unwanted provocation from the media with this incident happening the Mercury players are demanding better security and scheduled charter flights for the team. The League will have to be the one making the changes as the ability to fly charter is not up to the Mercury organization. This event is complicated as WNBA teams never had any need for charter flights until now.
Brittney Griner’s CONTROVERSIAL release from Russian prison
In early 2022, the Mercury centre was arrested for possession of illegal substances which was taken as a drug smuggling case by the authorities at the Russian airport. She was found to be carrying vaporizer cartridges containing less than a gram of hash oil which is legal as medicinal herbs in Arizona but is illegal in Russia.
Griner pleaded guilty and was sentenced to nine years in prison, after a long campaign from political figures and from the State, negotiations went through as Griner was exchanged for the infamous arms dealer Viktor Bout also known by his alias as the ‘Merchant of Death’. The exchange sparked controversies across different platforms as the US authorities were not able to recover former US marine Paul Whelan in the exchange.
Several top-headed personalities have condemned the Biden administration for choosing a basketball player over a former Marine, former President Donald Trump went on a rant displaying his disgust in the trade even Twitter Ceo, Elon Musk and social media Andrew Tate have expressed their disapproval of the exchange that took place.
Brittney’s case had always pultruded outside of basketball ever since the Russian Government got involved marking the disjunction of the American public.
