The 2023 WNBA season is underway and basketball fans are watching the women play with immense passion. However, this season is special for one very particular reason. Brittney Griner finally played her first game in 579 days. Her normal service for the Phoenix Mercury resumed as the Center made an impressive return to the league. Griner put up 18 points with six rebounds and four blocks. Ahead of the game, Griner even received a huge standing and road ovation from the crowd. Moreover, the Vice-President; Kamala Harris was in attendance for the game and spoke to the players before tip-off.

Griner’s return to the WNBA didn’t receive the warmest welcome. For starters, the Phoenix Mercury lost to the Los Angeles Spark by a whopping 23 points. Moreover, while some fans were excited to see her, many are unhappy with her performance. Although they would’ve been disappointed with Mercury’s loss, many have put Griner under harsh criticism.

Apart from Kamala Harris, former Los Angeles Lakers legend Pau Gasol and current coach Darvin Ham were also at the Mercury vs Sparks game. Even though there was a lot of love and support for the Center in the arena, many have otherwise not shown the same. Especially on Twitter, people have expressed their displeasure regarding the exchange around Brittney Griner’s release from prison. Griner was released by Russian authorities in exchange for Viktor Bout who is a Russian arms dealer. Many even call Bout the ‘merchant of death’. After the Mercury Center’s return, many have taken to social media to make comparisons.

Twitter is known to be unkind to players who have a poor game. Although Brittney Griner had a decent performance, fans are not showing her the sympathy card.

Some have even called her out for failing to score over 20 points despite being released after a prisoner exchange. An event they called ‘a trade for a supervillain’ referring to Viktor Bout. Here are a few reactions:
