Following the news of a prisoner swap with the Russian government breaking out, “Brittney Griner hates America” continues to trend on the internet. The prisoner swap brings Griner back to the US and sends the Russian arms dealer Viktor Bout, also called “the Merchant of Death” back to Russia. He was kept in a US prison for dealing arms on US soil.
President Joe Biden announced on Thursday the return of WNBA star Brittney Griner from the Russian prison. After the news of the release of Phoenix Mercury was announced, there were mixed responses from the social media community. While some were happy that Griner was finally returning to her homeland, others had a completely different reaction to the news.
However, not all were happy after the news broke out. While some said, Brittney hates America and opined that the US received the worse part of the deal. Some thought the government should have exchanged for former US Marine Paul Whelan.
During her WNBA season in 2020, Griner told in her interview with The Republic that she didn’t support the national anthem being played during the WNBA season. She also remained in her locker room and until the national anthem was done playing she didn’t hit the floor with her team.

Since Griner’s release, there has been backlash over the WNBA basketball star’s release. The people have expressed their frustration over giving up an arms dealer also known as “the Merchant of Death” in exchange for a person who allegedly hates America.
In her interview with The Republic, Griner expressed her discontent with the national anthem being played in the WNBA games. “I honestly feel we should not play the national anthem during our season,” and she also added that she has the utmost respect for her country but playing the national anthem wasn’t something she was a fan of. “I don’t mean that in any disrespect to our country. My dad was in Vietnam and a law officer for 30 years. I wanted to be a cop before basketball. I do have pride for my country,” Griner added.
She also said that she would protest over her stand if it continue all season long and she would sit out if it happened so. However, the Phoenix Mercury star said that she was with the national anthem being played at the Olympics since she was representing her country and it represented her.
Mercury forward, Brianna Turner came in support of Griner and said that the national anthem was deemed in 1931 when black people in America didn’t have any rights. In addition, she said, playing the national anthem specially during WNBA games was unnecessary. “It’s not played at Walmart, it’s not played when you go to Six Flags. Why is it played before sporting events?” said Turner.
