As the highest vote-getter in the 2026 WNBA All-Star Game, Paige Bueckers became the first starter to be selected to Team Coop. Eventually, she ended up getting close friend and fellow high school class of 2020 recruit Angel Reese as her teammate.

They were teammates last season also, and their camaraderie during practices was on full display. They went on to perform well together and continued that for USA Basketball’s FIFA World Cup regional qualifiers earlier this year.

The two tend to taunt each other jokingly during such sessions, which is why they also go at each other whenever there is a chance to upstage the other in a game of horse, or even half-court shots.

During this year’s All-Star practice, Reese managed to win some money after winning a competition. Then, while she and Bueckers were joking about who bested the other, the two bet that winning prize on their next game.

While many thought it was about their All-Star game, it wasn’t. When the regular season resumed after the weekend’s festivities, Paige Bueckers‘ Dallas Wings welcomed Angel Reese’s Atlanta Dream.

The bet was about this game. That is why the WNBA’s media staff asked the reigning Rookie of the Year about it and uploaded the clip, including that from the All-Star practice, on social media.

However, as soon as a fan account pointed out that the league was invariably promoting its players betting on games, the video vanished. But the fan account managed to keep a copy, and it has since gone viral.

Fans tear into WNBA for disastrous media gaffe

Those copies of that video have gone on to garner millions of views as fans scramble to understand that this was the WNBA actively promoting two of its biggest young stars betting on a game.

It is a clear violation, but is unlikely to result in major fines or suspensions. But what it has done is drawn responses from fans demanding accountability. They felt that this was a clear indication of how poorly managed the league is.

The league is already struggling to keep its head above the sand after numerous embarrassing and controversial situations. Fans felt that by now, it is time for the parent company, the NBA, to take over and show them how professionals work. Check out examples of those reactions below.

Angel Reese and Paige Bueckers may have been just betting a friendly wager. It is all fine when it is between competitors. Neither of them was colluding to help others benefit from it, as some NBA players have done and faced punishments. However, the WNBA promoting it is what baffled fans.

While fans were lambasting the WNBA for this gaffe, Angel Reese and Paige Bueckers were involved in a heated game. Both friends were talking trash, as both sides tried to gain the upper hand.

Eventually, the Maryland native and her Atlanta Dream overcame a 15-point deficit to win the game in the final few seconds. Reporters at the post-game press conference asked the forward whether she was going to demand her winnings.

Angel Reese replied

She went on to praise Bueckers and how the Dream managed to outperform them in the fourth quarter. But this clip is also going to be a matter of concern for Commissioner Cathy Engelbert and her top brass. The latter is already on thin ice regarding her job. This will only compound matters once the media demand answers.
