WNBA sponsor Nike gets bashed by fans for disrespectful tweet

The NBA’s Conference Finals ended last night. Up next is the NBA Finals scheduled to start on the 6th of June. This means there will be no basketball, or rather men’s basketball, for one week. Nike put out a tweet to suggest that after the Conference Finals ended, only to be bashed by fans as the famous sports apparel brand did not think about the WNBA, whose season has just started.

The WNBA has nationally televised games running all week. With all of the top championship contending in action at least twice, it was a major gaffe from the sportswear giant who also happen to be a major sponsor for the women’s basketball league. In fact, the biggest draw of the entire week will be the June 1st clash between Caitlin Clark and her Indiana Fever against her college rival Angel Reese and her Chicago Sky.

That game will probably be one of the most-watched basketball games in recent memory. Both Clark and Angel Reese, along with Cameron Brink, are bringing a lot of eyeballs to the league. This week, with them having no competition, will mean many basketball fans might switch to watch the women play.

In an attempt to connect with fans, the social media team of Nike completely left out the league that is just starting to take the limelight it has been seeking for a long time. For Nike’s tweet to pour cold water over, it was flat-out disrespectful.

Fans flame Nike for disrespecting the WNBA

Keen-eyed basketball fans caught wind of this tweet as soon as it went online. Instantly, they started replying to the tweet bashing the sportswear giant for disrespecting the women’s game, as they will play 10 games before the NBA Finals start. More importantly, all the superstars of the league will be playing at least twice. Nike deleted the tweet as soon as they realized that they messed up.

However, that did not stop fans from talking about it on social media. They had all sorts of comments to throw at Nike’s direction. Check out some of those examples below:

Nike is one of the major sponsors of the WNBA, to the extent that all women’s basketball players wear Nike gear in some form or the other. For them to goof up in this way is an embarrassment and disrespectful at the same time.
