Women on Top: Iga Swiatek and Coco Gauff climb up the WTA Ranking ladder
Iga Swiatek has had a dream run since the French Open last year. The nineteen year old entered the competition as World no.54. In the next two weeks she ended up with not only the French Open title but also an improved World ranking of no.17. In the process, she became the first Polish player to win a Grand Slam.
After a fourth round appearance in the Australian Open, it was time for the Adelaide International. The Adelaide International gave Swiatek a chance to prove her mettle. She lasted the full week and ended up with the trophy. Her second trophy on the WTA tour, and now has an even better ranking of World no.15.
Coco Gauff has done well too. After her Adelaide Open exploits she has jumped 14 places to no.38 in the World rankings. Gauff is the only player under 18 in the top 100 in the world, no mean feat. But Gauff’s tenacity must be commended. At the Adelaide International she made her way through the qualifiers to reach the Semi Finals of the event.
Juan Manuel Cerundolo and Alexei Popyrin rise up the rankings
Cerundolo in his very first ATP event impressed one and all by winning the Cordoba Cup. Before the tournaments he was ranked outside the top 300 and had to play qualifiers to get to the main draw. Once in the main draw he found a way to get to the finals. In the finals he beat Albert Ramos Vinolas. The nineteen year old Argentinian jumped more than a hundred places to be placed at a World no. 181 in the new rankings.
Alexei Popyrin the lanky Australian had a below par Australian Open, where he was eliminated in the second round. But in the Singapore Tennis Open he showed the world what he is capable of. He beat experienced campaigners like Marin Čilić in the Semis and upcoming talents like Alexander Bublik in the Finals to win the cup. In the new rankings he has climbed up to World no.82.
