When Woody Johnson decided to hit the reset button after two failed seasons with Aaron Rodgers leading the team, he hired former player Aaron Glenn to helm the next rebuild.
The first-year head coach and his GM did not have too many options at quarterback, but still decided to let the 4-time league MVP walk. They preferred to go with a younger quarterback, in this case, Justin Fields.
The latter did not have the best of times with the Pittsburgh Steelers. However, the Jets believed the 26-year-old had some untapped potential. His dual-threat ability was a bonus, and if they could get him comfortable throwing the ball, the sky was the limit.
In 6 games, the Ohio State alum has thrown for just 845 yards. His per-game average is a paltry 140.8, which places him 3rd from bottom among quarterbacks with at least 5 games under their belt.
The other two are rookies, Jaxson Dart and Dillon Gabriel, proving just how disappointing Fields has been so far. No wonder owner Woody Johnson decided to criticize his quarterback while speaking with Tom Rock.
It’s hard when you have a quarterback with the rating that we’ve got. He has the ability, but something is not driving him… You have to play consistently at that position… If we can just complete a pass, it would look good.

It seems the billionaire is directly demanding that Justin Fields pull his socks up and complete passes. Johnson has a point, as his starting QB has connected on just 4 touchdowns despite having a stellar set of receivers.
Woody Johnson defends Aaron Glenn amidst league-worst form
Whenever reporters asked Woody Johnson about the Jets in that interview, his response eventually came back to talking about Justin Fields‘ lackluster play. He also used that to defend Aaron Glenn.

It looks like he is turning around parts of it… If you see any head coach with a quarterback like that, you are going to see similar results across the league… It’s just defense, special teams are doing better.
Woody Johnson said
The former United States Ambassador to the United Kingdom believes Glenn is doing his part to turn around his flailing Jets. That is why he specifically mentioned the defense and special teams as units that have performed.
He then again came back to suggest that if Fields does not step up, this offense will not go anywhere. It seems that with the lack of good quarterbacks available on the market, Johnson believes his team’s chances depend completely on his quarterback’s performance.
Justin Fields dips into his faith to find strength after benching
During their Week 7 debacle against the Carolina Panthers, Justin Fields could not get his Jets to score a touchdown in the first half. After closing the 2nd quarter with a 10-yard loss on a sack, his head coach Aaron Glenn finally benched him for veteran Tyrod Taylor.
I can’t be mad at the decision… I always asked God to give me an opportunity and a platform to spread his word… I’m probably at a low right now… My faith is so rooted in Christ… I know he’s strong enough to help me handle it.
Justin Fields told reporters
"A little bit, but at the same time, I can't be mad at the decision."

Justin Fields was asked if he was surprised to be removed from the game.

This was the Jets QB’s reaction to when asked about how he handled his benching. It seems the Georgia native is looking towards his faith to help him come out of this situation.
