“Would be awesome ,” Charles Oliveira open against Alexander Volkanovski, Kamaru Usman for 145, 170-lbs title fight
Alexander Volkanovski- Charles Oliveira- Kamaru Usman
UFC Lightweight Champion Charles Oliveira is without a doubt on top of his world, the Brazilian last fought at UFC 269 when he pulled over an upset over the challenger and the betting favourite Dustin Poirier, submitting him via rear-naked choke in the third round and making his first title defence successful.
Right now, Oliveira is #5 in the pound-for-pound rankings of the UFC, the four people ahead of him are Francis Ngannou, Israel Adesanya, Alexander Volkanovski and Kamaru Usman. While Oliveira is nowhere close to even the thought of fighting Adesanya or Ngannou in the millions of possibilities, he however showed some interest to fight in either one of the two adjacent weight classes of the lightweight division.
Charles Oliveira confident he can make 145-lbs back again since 3 years moving up to the lightweight
In MMA Fighting’s Portuguese podcast titled Trocacao Franca, Oliveira expressed his openness to change the weight for another title in the future of his career. He is open to dropping down to featherweight to fight the champion Alexander Volkanovski or moving up to the welterweight to fight the champion there, Kamaru Usman.
On the podcast, Oliveira gave a legacy-based reason for his desires. He basically said, “If I had the opportunity to go straight for the 145-pound belt, I’d move down to fight. Also, if I had the opportunity to go straight for the 170-pound belt, I’d also move up to fight… Becoming a two-division champion, A Brazilian man, would be awesome.“
Charles Oliveira came to the UFC fighting in the featherweight, he had a good run until he came up to lightweight for a relatively easier weight cut and a better camp. This move turned out to be the best decision of his career as he paved of a 10-fight winning streak from the division that includes winning the belt and defending it. Talking about the weight cut, however, Oliveira has a different perspective and experience to lay down a positive note about the same.
“I really thought I couldn’t drop to 145 anymore,” Oliveira said, “but this last weight cut, I was really [close to] 155 before the fight with this work we’ve been doing, with lots of water in the body, and we believe we could easily make 145.” [h/t MMA Fighting]
As far as welterweight is considered, that should be around Oliveira’s natural weight. Oliveira as well as Volkanovski and Usman, are three of the most complete mixed martial artists in the entire UFC roster and their future seems to hold them as good as being the greatest of all time if time goes like it is going for them now. With legendary names in the victory list amongst all three, the fight of Oliveira against anyone else has to be nothing short of legendary and one to be rewatched again and again for the ages.
