A few hours ago, a joint press release from Consejo Mundial de Lucha Libre (CMLL) and New Japan Pro Wrestling (NJPW) confirmed Stephanie Vaquer‘s departure from the aforementioned promotions, effective immediately. As soon as the netizens gobbled up the lead, they knew something was in the works behind the scenes. And it does seem like that prophecy has come true.
Per an exclusive article published by Record Mexico, Vaquer is all but set to join WWE imminently. The Chilean wrestler was presented with offers by both WWE and AEW, as confirmed earlier by Sean Ross Sapp of Fightful. Sources close to the situation told Record that she has landed a multi-year agreement with the Stamford-based promotion.
In wake of La Primera’s brusque disaffiliation with CMLL and NJPW, she wouldn’t be competing at an event named Fantasticamania on July 13, one that the 31-year-old was previously scheduled for. She was also stripped of both the CMLL World Women’s and World Women’s Tag titles.
The official press release mentioned that The Gladiator had cited personal reasons to elect herself out of the rosters, thus terminating her contractual ties with them. There’s no word on when Vaquer could potentially debut in WWE. Nonetheless, one would imagine that she’s a huge get for Triple H and his team.
Not to let it slide away, WWE already has former NJPW Strong Women’s Champion Giulia waiting in the wings for her on-screen arrival as well. Having signed two of the most internationally adored female grapplers on the trot, WWE certainly has a pool of talented women to boast about. Stephanie recently lost her NJPW Strong Women’s title to Mercedes Mone at AEW: Forbidden Door.
Wrestling fans buzzing over WWE successfully landing Stephanie Vaquer despite AEW in play
To say the least, wrestling fans are having a field day on the internet. Stephanie Vaquer’s heavily-rumored WWE jump has left the buffs in splits, and they couldn’t resist but react. A user on X jocularly claimed that WWE’s Chief Content Officer, Triple H, has been “smoking” on AEW CEO Tony Khan‘s pack.
Apart from that, there are a plethora of folks who’re just as excited as anyone to see Steph make some moves in WWE. A fan also advocated against the newcomer’s potential alliance with the LWO, considering that she also comes from a Latino background.
It would be interesting to see if Stephanie is made to tango in NXT for a while before heading on to the main roster. As mentioned above, she was backstage at NXT Heatwave PLE this past weekend in Toronto.
