Chronic traumatic encephalopathy, commonly referred to as CTE, is a serious condition caused by trauma to the head. The condition used to be extremely common in the professional wrestling industry a few years ago and continues to be a topic of debate. ‘Stone Cold’ Steve Austin recently made some controversial remarks about the issue.

It was inevitable for the recently released Mr. McMahon Netflix documentary to feature an interview with his greatest rival. Speaking on the docuseries, Austin revealed that he rarely got any concussions throughout his time in the professional wrestling business. He even went so far as to say that if someone is suffering from such issues, they are doing something wrong.

CTE became a prominent issue in the professional wrestling industry after the Chris Benoit tragedy in 2007. WWE immediately banned all dangerous moves to the head, such as piledrivers, brainbusters, vertebreakers, chairshots to the head, and more. Fans are also outspoken on social media against promotions allowing any such dangerous moves.

However, these moves have come back in recent times. Sami Zayn was seen hitting Gunther with a brainbuster on the top turnbuckle during their WrestleMania XL match. AJ Styles also landed a burning hammer on Cody Rhodes during their match at WWE Backlash.

The wrestling world calls out Stone Cold Steve Austin for his ignorant remarks about CTE

It is no surprise that these remarks by ‘Stone Cold’ Steve Austin led to a lot of backlash on social media. CTE has been scientifically proven in multiple studies. Thus, it was highly ignorant of the former WWE Champion to say that he did not believe in such a thing.

Austin has faced issues with his neck throughout his life. He took a botched piledriver at SummerSlam 1997 by Owen Hart. This incident severely reduced the lifespan of his career and forced him to retire early. They called him out for being a hypocrite as he has spoken a lot about neck issues in the past but dismissed CTE only because he never suffered from it.

Although he may not have personally experienced it, it was important to talk about the issue in contact sports to extend the longevity of the athletes and their long-term health. Fans brought up that CTE was a real issue that extended beyond professional wrestling. The NFL had to settle multiple lawsuits with former football players because the league had been undermining the problem in the past.
