Dean Ambrose was adored by the fans during his time in WWE. He was a core member of The Shield, widely regarded as one of the best factions to ever grace WWE. The group was dominant during its time. Furthermore, its members continue to rule the professional wrestling landscape today. With WWE recently dropping a reference to the group, fans wondered if it was finally time for the 38-year-old to return to the company.

The WWE YouTube channel recently released a video of the best moments of The Shield’s run in the promotion. It features highlights of the early main roster careers of Roman Reigns, Seth Rollins, and Dean Ambrose. It was also released almost ten years after the breakup of the group.

The video starts off with their iconic debut at Survivor Series 2012. It then transitions to their WrestleMania matches as a group, their highly-rated match at Elimination Chamber against The Wyatt Family, and their domination of Evolution in 2014. The video ends with the group’s implosion, where Seth Rollins backstabs his brothers with a steel chair on Raw.

What excited fans the most was the company’s direct reference to Dean Ambrose. Being a core member of the group, he is featured prominently in the thumbnail and throughout the 2+ hour-long video. Since the former WWE Champion left the company in 2019, he has been rarely mentioned by the company. Thus, this came as a huge surprise to fans.

The Wrestling World goes ballistic after WWE mentions Dean Ambrose, sparks return rumors at The Royal Rumble

This video caused massive speculation in the wrestling world. Many speculated that there was some reason for WWE to release this video. The company dropped several references and teasers to CM Punk before his return to Chicago at Survivor Series: WarGames. This could be another manifestation of that, and The Lunatic Fringe may be bound for a return at The Royal Rumble.

Many fans were hoping to see Ambrose as one of the surprise appearances at the end of WrestleMania XL, especially after The Shield music hit. Ambrose appearing at the show would have made perfect sense, considering that the faction’s break-up was a major cause for Roman Reigns losing his WWE Undisputed championship. Alas, it was not to be due to his contract with AEW.

The prevailing rational sentiment among the community continued to be that this was not a hint of something to come in the future. WWE, under its new regime, has not shied away from mentioning superstars who are not with the company anymore. Furthermore, The Shield storyline has been referenced multiple times during The Bloodline story arc and Roman Reigns’ character as the tribal chief.
