Wrestling National Championships: Divya Kakran gets knocked out in qualification round; Sonam Malik retains title

Asian champion wrestler Divya Kakran returned to the wrestling mat after 11 long months but her much awaited return got over in barely six minutes as the young wrestler could not get back to form. She crashed out in the qualification round of the 68 kg category on Day 2 of the Women’s Wrestling National Championships which is in its 23rd edition and is being held in Agra.

Kakran last played at the Asian Championship in February and won a gold medal. However today she was easily knocked out by Rajani who went on to clinch silver. Anita Sheoran who is currently 36 years old claimed the gold.

Sonam Malik beats Sakshi Malik

In the 62 kg category, Olympic medalist Sakshi Malik was beaten by Sonam Malik who registered her third consecutive win against Sakshi. With the win, she inched towards achieving her dream of making it to the Olympics. The final scoreline was 7-5 in the bout. With the win, Sonam assured herself of a place at the Rome Rankings Event while also making a statement as a favorite at the selection trials for the Olympic qualifiers.

In other categories, Nandini Salokhe won in the 53 kg one by beating Mamta Rani 8-0 in the final. Nisha retained the title in the 65 kg category by beating Monika 12-0 while Kiran won in the 76 kg category.
