Wrestling: Olympic qualifiers to take place in April; WFI to organize senior nationals in January

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic situation around the world, the United World Wrestling (UWW) has shifted the Asian Olympic Qualifiers to Almaty in Kazakhstan. The qualifiers were initially supposed to be held in China but will now be held in the central Asian country of Kazakhstan from April 9-11. Immediately after, the Asian Wrestling Championships will be held at the same venue from April 12-17.
The World Olympic Qualifiers will meanwhile, take place in Bulgaria from May 6-9. The final tournament before the Tokyo Olympic Games in July will be the Poland Open Ranking Series from June 8-13. “To help with costs and coordination the bureau also voted to combine the Asian Championships and Olympic Qualifier to Almaty, Kazakhstan with the tournaments set to run back-to-back April 9-17,” UWW said in a statement.
WFI to organize Senior Nationals at three venues
The Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) meanwhile, has released the schedule for the calendar before the Olympic Games. The Senior National Wrestling Championships will be held across three venues in January and February. The men’s freestyle events will be held in Noida on January 23 and 24 while the women’s wrestling events will be held in Agra on January 30 and 31.
The WFI has also planned to host the Greco-Roman meet in Punjab for which the dates haven’t been confirmed yet. The senior nationals will follow the national trials which will be used to select the team of wrestlers for the Asian qualifiers as well as the Asian Championships.
