WT20 Challenge Supernovas vs Velocity: Sune Luus plays a matchwinning knock as Velocity defeat Supernovas by 5 wickets
Jio Women’s T20 Challenge commenced at Sharjah with the first match being played between Supernovas and Velocity. The first game was a thriller as it went till the final over of the match. Sune Luss played an unbeaten 37 runs knock in 21 deliveries to lead the Velocity to a 5 wicket victory over Supernovas.
Batting first supernovas posted a score of 126 runs with the help of Chamari Athapaththu’s 44 runs. The start for Velocity wasn’t very good as opener Danielle Wyatt lost her wicket for a five-ball duck. Shefali Verma then played scored four boundaries as she batted freely. However, she soon departed for 17 runs, and Velocity were reduced to 17/2 in 2.6 overs.
Skipper Mithali Raj couldn’t add much and lost her wicket in the 9th over. Raj made 7 runs from 19 balls. Veda Krishnamurthy and Sushma Verma then added a crucial partnership for the team which eased the pressure. Krishnamurthy was caught while batting on 29 runs to Radha Yadav.
South African Sune Luss and Verma then struck to the run chase and added 51 run partnership for the team. Verma got out for 34 runs in 33 balls hitting 2 big sixes. The match became interesting with 14 runs required in the last two overs. However, Luss struck a boundary that reduced the gap, and on the penultimate ball edged it for a four. As a result, Velocity defeated Supernova by 5 wickets and a ball to spare.

Athapaththu’s 44 run powers Supernova to 126/8
Supernovas batting first could add 126 runs at the high scoring Sharjah Cricket Stadium. Priya Punia and Chamari Athapaththu opened the batting for the team and added 30 runs for the first wicket. Jemimah Rodrigues was cleaned bowled by Ekta Bisht for just 7 runs.
Skipper Harmanpreet Kaur and Athapaththu the two experienced players then took the innings forward. Athapaththu got out after scoring 44 runs from 39 balls hitting 2 sixes and two boundaries. Harmanpreet also got out soon after for 31 runs in 29 balls. Shashikala Siriwardene made 18 runs as the rest of the players lost their wickets in quick succession.
Supernovas could make 126/8 in 20 overs. Ekta Bisht took 3 wickets for 22 runs in four overs. Jahanara Alam and Leigh Kasperek took two wickets each.
