WTA 500 Adelaide International: Qualifying schedule announced, main draw gets underway from 22nd February

The WTA 500 event, Adelaide International, will start on the 22nd of February and run till the 28th of February. The event is played on the hard courts and will be held at the Memorial Drive Tennis Centre. The winner will take home a purse of 68,570(USD). The qualifiers for the event will start on the 21st of February.

There are a few prominent players who will be participating in the Qualifiers of the Adelaide International on the 21st of February in hope of reaching the main draw. Some of those players are, American teenager Coco Gauff, Misaki Doi of Japan, and India no.1 Ankita Raina. 

Ash Barty gets a late wildcard for the Adelaide International event

Last year’s defending champion Ash Barty was a late entrant to the event this year. She used a wildcard and confirmed her participation at the last minute. Last year she beat Dayana Yastremska, 6-2 7-5, to win the title. She will also be the top seed for the event. Barty one may recall was one of the favourite to win the Australian Open until her sudden loss against Karolína Muchová in the Quarter finals.

But, what is Australian Open’s loss turns out to be Adelaide International’s gain, as the early loss means Barty can now participate in this event. Apart from Barty, there are several other top 20 players are on the tournament’s line-up, including  Switzerland’s Belinda Bencic and Britain’s Johanna Konta. Canada’s Bianca Andreescu was also scheduled to be a part of the event, but a last minute injury forced her to withdraw.

Apart from Ash Barty three other Australian players have received wild card entry into the main draw of the tournament. They are Olivia Gadecki, Samantha Stosur and Ajla Tomljanović.
