In the opening round, Tormo was given a tough-looking opening draw against Nadia Podoroska of Argentina, the WTA World Young Player of the Year for 2020 after her performance at the French Open where she got to the semi-finals back in October. In the end though, the Spaniard dealt with the challenge of the Argentine with comparative ease.

Pera, currently ranked as World No.62, has already had a good start to 2021 by knocking out the number 16 seed, Donna Vecic of Croatia in the first round. The battle lasted for over three hours as the match went into a decider. Vecic broke Pera’s serve early in the third set and it look like the Croatian would prevail. However, it was Vecic who cracked under pressure and dropped her serve twice more, allowing Pera to secure victory in a little over three hours.

Given the fact that Tormo had an easier battle, she will be the fresher of the pair and that should give her the edge.
