The Adelaide International was supposed to be redemption for Ash Barty but what transpired was a second round humiliation for the reigning world no.1Danielle Collins who herself was knocked out of the Australian Open in only the second round, made a fantastic comeback to inflict a loss on Ash Barty.

Barty took a 3-1 lead in the first set, before losing the next five games on the trot to give up the first set 6-3. In the second set too, she was in the lead before losing that set 6-4. Barty was especially poor with her serves, where she could serve in only 55% of her first serves.

In the end, a straight set defeat for Ash Barty 3-6 4-6, in around 65 mins. With this win Danielle Collins recorded her first win against Ash Barty, in her fourth attempt.

Is Ash Barty on a downward spiral?

Ash Barty

Ash Barty had only last week been dumped out of the Australian Open 2021 by Karolína Muchová in the Quarter Final stage. In that match too, she just couldn’t play her game after play resumed post medical time out. The same loss of rhythm, and it ended in defeat. Barty had lost that match in three sets with the score line, 6-1 3-6 2-6.

The World no.1 has since her return to tour, lost two of the three tournaments she has participated in. This result is especially humiliating for the late wild card entrant, as she couldn’t even win a single match in this tournament. Barty should look to learn from her mistakes and try not to rush back again.
