Anisimova has had a tough last few months. Early this year, she had travelled to Abu Dhabi to participate in the tournament there. But, she contracted Covid even before the tournament started. What made it worse is that she failed to get a negative test before the deadline and failed to get on the flight to Melbourne, missing the Australian Open 2021.

After missing a big chunk of the season, Anisimova came back on tour with the Dubai open, where she lost to Garbine Muguruza in the second round, The just concluded Miami Open 2021 was the last tournament she competed in, where she was ousted in the second round by Bianca Andreescu, 6-7 7-6 4-6.

Her first round opponent is Magda Linette. Linette the twenty-nine year old from Poland missed the Australian Open and subsequent tournaments with a serious knee injury. She came back to tour with the Miami Open 2021, but lost in the second round to Johanna Konta, 4-6 5-7.

Anisimova is one of the rising stars of the ladies tour, at only nineteen she already has a WTA Title to her name. She won the WTA Bogota title in 2019 and in later that year had reached her best ranking of twenty one.

Her powerful groundstrokes and quick movement coupled with it her excellent return of serve makes her a tough opponent. Linette will have to work very hard to get something out of this match.
